2017 Tesla Model III

Yes, the 3 series fighter from Tesla will officially be named...Model III.

Quote:
Tesla really is a unique automaker. Usually when a new model is confirmed, there are big press announcements touting a company's latest, greatest vehicle and everything it can do for consumers. Elon Musk's electric car company likes to do things a little differently, though. Instead, the CEO gave an interview about its long-awaited entry-level offering, the Model III, to the UK's Auto Express and confirmed the story on its Facebook page.

Corporate statements doesn't get much simpler and to the point that that. The smaller, cheaper Model III will be aimed against compact premium sedans like the BMW 3 Series and will be unveiled in 2016 before actually going on sale in 2017. According to Musk, the new vehicle will offer a 200-mile range and will carry a price tag of around $35,000.

Musk told Auto Express, Tesla was seriously planning to call it the Model E, until Ford disputed the name. "The new model is going to be called Model 3, we'll have three bars to represent it and it'll be S III X," he said.

Sadly, Musk didn't reveal any other technical details about the Model III. However, it's rumored to be about 20-percent smaller than the Model S. To save money, the platform reportedly uses a more steel-intensive construction than its big brother, and the battery packs are likely to come from the Tesla Gigafactory.

Musk also let slip one last detail while speaking to Auto Express. It turns out that the rumored update for the Roadster is entirely real and involves an upgraded battery pack available to existing owners to boost range from the current 245 miles to around 400 miles. He didn't say when the modification would be available, though.

I, personally, am really excited about this. If it ends up being as good as the Model S, I may even buy one.

Doesn't the model S get in the high 200s for range? Seems strange that in 2 years they still can't break the 300 mile barrier. For 35K, it can be a big hit, but I still maintain they need to make a small econobox with a 200 mile range for 12K.

EPA rates the Model S at 265 miles with the largest battery pack, Tesla claims 300 miles. New car will be 20% smaller but probably the same or more weight due to the use of steel over more expensive materials. Also, smaller car means less space for battery.

We'll see what happens in the next 2-3 years but it wouldn't surprise me if they said "just kidding, it now gets 300 miles of range".

Gotcha. Im waiting for someone to come out with a really cheap "city car" like the gwhiz in the UK but without the suck and without the ugly. No fancy leather, no fancy navi, just a "go to work" vehicle. I would most likely jump right on that.

they are not an econobox car company. they are top of the line. elec vehicle.

batteries are at around $500/kW-hr. to get 200 mi range you would need a 50-60kW battery. that alone would cost $25-30k.

the range is directly related to the weight and to make it cheaper it will be heavier. there are also different range options, so the $35k may be the cheapest with the lowest range while a fully loaded $50k on could go 300 mi.

Econoboxes pay the bills, luxo toys for rich people don't. If they don't come out with a mass market econobox, their days will be numbered.

I used to hear that mantra from people all the time, but I think the success of apple alone is enough to counter that logic. They've never made anything cheap for their category, yet they dominate.

Similarly true for gulfstream as of late, they come out with their newest biggest most absurdly expensive jet and it now takes up over 50% of their production capacity. Clearly there's nothing wrong with marketing to a wealthier demographic.

a $35k car is not a luxo car for the rich. that is average. go buy a camry, accord, taurus, etc. it's right there. clueless!

It's all a matter of scale. Not sure of Gulfstream's lineup but the one that takes up 50% of the capacity is likely not the most expensive one they sell. Is it more than the cost of their competitors, probably.

For the Accord, the Touring V6 model is not their volume seller. You'll see more of the LX/EX models that make up the vast majority of their sales volumes. Ditto for Lamborghini, nothing they make is cheap but the car that pays the bills is (or was) the Gallardo not the more expensive Aventador or Murcielago. Same for Porsche, they sell tons of 911 Carrera and Carrera S models but not all that many 911 Turbo S models.

What NFR is trying to get at is that if they make a $20k econobox that gets enough range for people to drive to work and back, they will sell tons of them. Selling tons of cheap/little cars will (depending on their business model) make more money than selling one expensive car.

yeah, i know what he is saying. and he said $12k. LOL he has no clue about the cost of batteries. it will be a big milestone to get it under $300/kW-hr as predicted by 2015. the gigafactory will be interesting to see the impact. like everything, it is all about scale. look at flat televisions or solar pv. the cost will go nowhere but down.

It's the single most expensive dedicated corporate jet you can buy! $65M, and the order log goes for damn near half a decade.

I'm just saying there's clearly nothing wrong in catering to a wealthy demographic.
