Striving for the Ultimate E46 M3 Sound..Custom Exhaust... Video inside

I have been working on designing my own exhaust and have been experimenting with different variations of sizing, resonated and unresonated piping, and single or dual. My old setup included race headers and completely straight piped. It was loud as all hell but a rasp machine. I took a different approach this time.

The exhaust is 80% done. I am just waiting for my bimmerworld headers to come in on tuesday.

So here is what is going on so far.

I have my section 1 with twin ar20's because a good amount of the torque comes from the dual section 1 pipes so I left that untouched, just resonated to remove rasp. My section 2 is a custom made unresonated x pipe with a qtp 3 inch valve for sound control. I am running the stock muffler with E92 M3 titanium tips, which I know stick out too far. They are getting shortened this week. When the cutout is open I am essentially running a straight through resonated exhaust with no muffler. When the valve is closed it feeds back into the stock muffler, which does an amazing job and makes it completely bone stock quiet but with 100% no rasp. You will hear me close the valve at 28 seconds into the clipand re-open it midrev. Once headers come in I will be running a straight piped setup with 2 resonators when the valve is open and when closed it feeds back into the stock muffler.

So as of now the exhaust is still not complete. Absolutely no rasp in person. Video doesn't do justice. And sorry for the over abundance of downshifts. With SMG it's too easy to want to downshift. I was trying to show all RPM ranges of sound including some throttle blips. I can't beleive I hit the rev limiter. So embarassing.

Let me know what you think so far. Thanks guys

thanks guys. just to show how much improvement I've had in sound over my old setup from 2 years ago. I will post the video as well. This is how a straight piped M3 sounds.... Like crap

My old setup. Left obviously. Right is stock

It doesn't actually sound too bad for basically straight pipes. I'm amazed how much more controlled the exhaust sounds with the resonated section 1 vs full straight. A little too loud for me but that's what the cutout is for I guess. Any pics of the underside? The cutout looks to hang a bit low?

I prefer Resonated anyway over straight pipe since I essentially had both on my own car. I can't believe I used to like my old setup. The cutout does hang a bit low but it was the only option running as large as a cutout I did while trying to fit it in while designing an x pipe. The cut out has a down turn to aim the gas downward which makes it look lower. It never scraped doesn't come near just appears that way.

You would think I would have new pics but I forgot to snap some when it was on the lift.I aim on wed when headers are getting put in.

Mine might sound similar to this when I get my headers put on wednesday. We will find out. I have no idea what to expect!

I'd like to see some pictures of the exhaust; from underneath, or some sort of angle.

Looking to do a similar set up, except with just stock exhaust.

Maybe you can give me some input... Looking to do a y-pipe (2-1) from the stock headers, into a 3" pipe with an Aero 3" resonator all the way back to a single exit; with an Aero 3030 muffler (or AT303XL, resonated muffler). Thoughts?
