The Dilemma

I've never posted in this area, I've never even been in it. But I just had to say this out loud, and FB is naw.... this place seems most appropriate anyway. And surprisingly enough, i don't have a lot of motorhead friends.

So, the dilemma. I've decided I want a 911. I bought my dream car (at the time) at 21, a 951. But I quickly learned why most people don't have Porsches: it's nothing to buy one, it's owning it that's expensive. So I sold that moved into a BM and haven't looked back. But after owning nothing but for the last 20 years, I have to own a 911. And the 996 seems like a great entry. I know, it's water-cooled. It was built from the same parts bins as the boxster (even though I'd argue that the S is a real Porsche... I'm just not a vert kinda gal), but at the current, it's a tremendous value and a real 911.

But back to that dilemma. The current garage consists of a an e46 330ci, an e30 325is, an r1100s and an r/90. Two examples of the same model roughly 25 years apart. And it's fun to not only look at the progression of engineering, but it's even more to experience them on a daily basis. Realistically, I'd need to get rid one of the cars and probably one of the bikes in order to make an extremely well optioned, well cared for 996 that I've fallen for, the c4s.

To make matters worse, they're all perfect examples. The two 3ers are both manuals and perfectly optioned. The e46 is an Individual car and the e30 is my fav combo (87is I converted to late model bumpers in Alpine on Buffalo). The r1100s is one of the best bikes BMW ever made and the r90/6 would be a crime to let go of.

Is the 911 the end all be all as a driver's car? Worth thinning the herd?

Flame away.

...but to just finish the serious thought, C4S all the way. I've been watching 997.2 C4S for years now, waiting for the right moment (i.e., when my grad school debt is paid off).

Just the kind of encouragement I was after, lol. Yes, I'm poor, that why I don't have a 916, lolz. Pix of motos per request, (I sold the K75 last week). As good as the S2000 is, not goin JDM and if I were to stray from German it'd be a GenIII rx7.

Fayaree, like what your thinkin with the 997.2, the uptick in initial investment comes with the unlikelyhood of an IMS failure. But again, I'm poor. Any other thoughts from any pcar fans on a BM forum?

Forget the 996, spend a little bit more or save a little longer for the 997. The 996 looks more outdated than a 964 or 993, it's just not pretty both inside and out. IMO

Beautiful bikes. With regards to your question, E46 M3 is the clear answer over the Porsche options. I road in my buddies with 350hp and he switched highways at wot scared tge piss out of me felt as fast other bodies 500hp supra awesome car they are rare hopefully they will bring them back rx8s r ok but I don't like tge rear doors and odd shape and lackbof turbos.

OP - how many boats do you have? Are any of them bigger than a dinghy? Have you run into Kubica at the yacht club yet? What did you have for lunch today? Do you like lobster rolls and cheesesteaks?

Well, considering that your 330ci in your sig looks amazing and almost M3-like, and both of these bikes are absolutely stellar, you have a knack for taking car of cars and bikes for sure.

Don't be a fool and get rid of either car or bike, you've worked so hard for so long to keep them in tip top shape and in this condition, and they are rare. You'll hate yourself if you move one of them on. Do what you can to avoid that, and find a cheaper 911, or just wait longer.

Has anyone mentioned to just get a S2000?

trizzered is just upset that a small Honda roadster is worth more and is far more reliable than the precious E46 M3.

OP, if I were you I'd toss the E46 and get the Porsche. The E46 is nothing special at this point while the E30 has a lot more character and class. Also, definitely get the 997 to avoid IMS grenading the engine unless there's proof that the bearing was replaced with something that doesn't explode. Or buy the 996 Turbo which doesn't have the issue at all.

The headlights and interior look so nice on the 997
but the 996 is no slouch with some mods it could be nice.

I have only driven the 996 I thought it was awesome. I bet the 997 is better
I don't think you can go wrong with any 911 if you are willing to pay for the maintenance.

Yeah, the 997 to the untrain eye, still looks very modern and new.

Interior is much nicer than the 996 (Not my car, I have all black interior)
