This reminds me of 7 out of 8 bolts backing out on the harmonic balancer on my 540i. So lucky that I cought it otherwise had it fallen off, it would have killed everything up front.

It is a well known problem with the e46 M3, per the service manager at BMW of Fife. When they service the car they supposedly check them. Anyways with mine the day I heard the first clunk I took to the guys who installed my tranny, I thought maybe they didn't tighten something down properly.

PLease change out ur diff bolts to the new design.

My master tech didnt use any loctite so I dont recommend it, torque specs are 90 degree angle torque and then 220nm torque I THINK But dont hold me to it. You will need to check with the dealership from where your picking up the bolts or maybe someone on here can help.

I apologize for not having the torque specs and its almost 2300 here so I cant call up my tech now....

Anyone know of the most efficient way of tightening the two rear torx bolts?

I have a torque wrench 1/2 drive and my female torx socket is a 3/8, with the adapter on its impossible to fit the tool in unless you have a universal joint, which to my knowledge will not yield a proper torque read on the wrench.

get a 3/8 torque wrench would be best, or a 1/2 inch torx socket.

gonna have to go hunt one down lol.

I took the hex bolt out and the first 2 threads were significantly damaged, which makes me wonder if the threads in the diff are done. Has anyone had experience with this?

While my car was on the lift my mechanic checked the bolts and they were all nice and tight. I already bought and have all the new bolts and washers, should I even bother changing them out?
