Temp gage low, and heater not working

Hi all,

Sorry to ask a question, but have searched for ages and cant find an answer...

Basically, i've got a 125k mile 323ci, which has a full service history.

However, i have 2 problems, which i suspect could be related.

1. My Temp gauge only intermittently goes to the vertical position, but the majority of the time remains int he cold section.

2. My heater in the car will not blow hot air. No matter how warm i set the temperature, i cannot get hot air out of the blower (and yes i've set it to the red dots etc). However, it does seem to feel slightly warmer when i have the AC on...!

There are no fault lights on the dashboard.

So, my assumption is that the Thermostat needs replacing... would i be correct in thinking this?

Yes, absolutely correct. Therm stuck open...search for that and you'll find these symptoms.

I had that...didn't have an issue much with heat, but suppose that's an issue of how stuck open it is too, and mine prolly also happened in the spring/fall if I recall...so maybe wasn't noticing heat wasn't so hot.

Yes thermostat stuck open is the problem - agree with dmax. I also had this but was throwing a code that indicated exactly that. I also experienced my heat not getting as hot as it should, and mine was also intermittent. My system never overheated but it did stick open sporadically.

If you DIY this, and it is a very easy DIY, let the system come up to temperature while driving around and pay very close attention to the temp gauge. I did mine, swore that the hoses were firmly in place after the procedure only to find out that one of the clips didn't fully seat, which caused a minor overheating condition and some more time working on the car.

Thanks men.

I'll have a look for a DIY and then get it sorted.

Yeah its the thermo. I get heat -- just not out of the middle vents. Top and bottom vents spew out heat, as do my defrosters. However if I turn on the middle vents, no heat.
