How much Oil??

I am confused. I have a 04 325xi. Some places say this needs 8qt's of oil, some say 7. the owners manual says to use less oil for an xi than than a normal 325. Any clarity as I just did an oil change and dumped in 7 qts and dont want to be one short....

My Ride: Has AWD
Put 6.5 in, run it, turn it off, check oil, add accordingly.

The xi's run a bit more oil than the regular 3 series.

I can get about 7 quarts in my xi. I run the oil slightly overfilled. You should have an extra quart handy anyways- so buy 8.

I bought 8qts, 7qts went in, the last one sits on the shelf just in case.

perfect. thats what I thought. I am not sure why different places reference a higher capacity for the XI. I overfilled at 7qt's then, and I am ok with that.

I had heard the 8qt information as well before my first oil change. When at the dealer picking up the magic BMW elixer, for my '04 XI, I mentioned this and the guy behind the parts counter emphatically told me it would only take 7 regardless of what I had "heard". Even told me to come back if I needed the 8th qt and he would give it to me. Well 7 qts later and the XI was full to the top mark.

I dont know if maybe some of the earlier ones took 8 or not....

so you did. I searched but it didnt come up for some reason. So sounds like in facelifted cars its 7 and pre face its 8. I am retarded and cant read dipsticks like the BMW one so I dumped in all 7 and seems to be fine. I guess I have another 4-5 months to figure this out!

Checking the owner's manual for the 325xi & 330xi it shows oil capacity with filter change to be 7.9 US Qts. I recently changed my oil using ramps and got the engine to full operating temp and immediately drained the oil & replaced the filter. I put 7 Qts in the crankcase, fired up the car, let it run for a minute, rolled it off the ramps, let it sit for a few minutes, needed more oil, put 1/2 Qt in and rechecked, still needed more so I put the remainder of the 8th Qt in the crankcase, checked the level and it was right at the max mark on the dip stick.

Am I missing something? Seems my car needed exactly the amount of oil the book calls for. I wonder why so many have used less. Interesting.

Duck- I see you have an 01. I think they must have changed something at some point. All the later model manuals call for 6.9 or whatever. Very confusing.

I agree with two duck. When my car was awd i ran 8 quarts all the time. No issues. Mine is also an 01. Don't ever listen to people at the dealer. Unless you know them. They are running a business (get money) and have big scary lawyers. They don't car about your 10 yr old 3 series. I put over 75k miles on my car running 0w40 8qts changed every 2500 miles GL

Why do we continue to beat this dead horse with a stick? Just fill it up till the dip stick reads full and leave it alone. If you can't read a dipstick, please take the car to someone who can or RTFM.
