I have no problems holding my own against a e36 M3 and we have the proper ones here. I get to drive one every now and again so I do know how they drive. I'm not saying I can beat them but I can sure turn corners just as fast.

US version e36 M3's aren't real M3's anyway. I would rather a swapped or boosted e30 any day of the week.

E30 "is" (325 or 318) have very specific buyers who *will* pay. In a round about way, a 318is maybe more rare than a M3. An M3 buyer new what they were getting and either beat the **** out of it or wrecked it. A 318is is a fun car to drive (around 20% less performance than a M3), but owners treated them like Hondas and didn't keep up with the maintanence (so goes my theory).

Personally, I'm not fond of the "e", but either way if it's a cared for unmolested E30 there is a premium market for it.

very true. the owners that do sell them tend to neglect the profile gasket recall that essentially grenades the m42 engine. so if its on sale, most likely coolant is already leaking into the block.

it's hard to find good condition e30s for $3K and under in the first place, and once you do acquire 1, you would have to spend a few more thousands to restore/mod it to the way you'd be happy with, and by then you would have spent $5K+ total. for $6K+/-, you should be able to find a fairly good early model e36 m3 that requires only minor refreshening. that's all i'm saying...

I do not agree with this statement.

I got mine for under 2K and for around 5K I can have something that is dead reliable, and I can got autoX every weekend with it. thats fully modded, granted I can get stuff a bit cheaper, and I do all my own work, but thats what the budget stands at. for 6-6.5K I could have a 300rwhp boosted beast. And that may end up happening. you will not find an e36 m3 in as good mechanicle condition for 6 grand. and if you plan on tracking it oyur gonna want to mod it, and ///M parts are WAY more expensive than nonM part to part.

E30 all the way. You won't regret it. Granted a nice clean one is hard to find but I also waited and found one for 2k. 90 325is. Would not trade it for anything.

When going to look at an E30, what questions should I ask?

Im aware I should ask for maintenance records, timing belt, flue pump, clutch. What else?

records are important.

depending on engine.

M20 - last time the timing belt/waterpump was changed, look for oil leaks around the oil pan or damage from bumps, look at lower gaskets on the brake master cylinder

m42 - no timing issues - spend more time inquiring about general maintenance, milage - cooling and suspension.

take it on a hard test drive and see how it acts....

What is the cost of doing the time belt job? Parts alone? and how much does the labor usually cost?
Same thing with Water pump.

you're looking around 400-600 with parts and labor. this includes a new water pump. the only problem i have with the e30's are the timing belts but it also gives it their strong characteristics.

I paid about 100 bucks for all the parts for timingbelt/waterpump

def gonna do it myself, lots of great diy out there. you also need coolant as well, probably about a 5-6 hour job.
