Even the dealership offered my to change the thermostat and the upper hose for $300.
Yes the radiator is more expensive than the thermostat but labour is same and the parts are nowhere near to be 800. Turn away and never go back to that shop again.

Truthfully there is no end to the amount of markup some dealers will apply. They are literally without conscience when it comes to taking advantage.
I can get the rad for under 150 delivered, hoses are under fifty, thermostat about 45 and add in another 40 for fresh coolant. So under 300 for parts and you really should do ET at the same time for 60. Experienced labor would do this in under an hour, but you'd take longer. Dealer should charge less. Indy would charge less than that. You be the judge. Just to prove a point! http://www.bmaparts.com/ShopByVehicl...diator&mode=PA Last edited by Stinger9; 03-20-2012 at 04:23 PM. |

Stay stock my friends!

So, OP, for $450 and maybe 3-4 hours of work...and maybe 3-4 hours of studying time before hand...you get more work, an entire system, for less than the dealer.
Truth is, it's a high cost, but not unreasonable...parts at dealer are probably $4-500 easy...so I think they're charging you 2-2.5 hours of labor--a little rip off, but you're doing most of the ripping off of yourself...so don't blame them. |

Look to one of the sponsors for a cooling system Kit and you would have your COMPLETE cooling system* taken care of for less, instead of Just a radiator, thermostat, and 2 hoses from your current shop...
I would walk away from this shop. * There's more components involved that you Should replace (at the same time), than what's already listed. |

Radiator - 150
Both hoses - 50 Thermostat - 55 ~ 260 in parts alone. 2 hrs labor say 180 and 20 for coolant. 460-500. No more.

If you can DIY you can save money.
Since your question was the price in the "ballpark". Yes for a shop to do the work the price is fair. I am sure I will get flamed for this. But the price is within industry standards for that repair. Yes the shop will have a mark-up of 20-49% on parts. They have to make money on parts and labor. SAD TRUTH IS THE CONSUMER CAN BUY PARTS FOR THE SAME COST AS A SHOP THAT BUYS 200K a year IN PARTS... I ran the job on my system and came up with 729 including tax. As others have stated you really need to look at replacing other cooling system parts are the same time. EXPANSION tank for sure.

Well you shouldn't get flamed for voicing an alternate and honest perspective to shine a light on the other side of things. Gives us an idea of what DIY is worth to us personally.
Thanks for making the effort |

Do the entire cooling system at the same time. If you leave something out now, you'll regret it later. Plus, the entire DIY cost won't be as much as $800. ECStuning has some cooling system 'refresh kits' that include most all of the parts you would need for the cooling system. Depending on how much you want to replace, they range between $200 and $800, including a radiator. I thought the cooling system DIY was pretty easy.

@NSF e46,
Quite honestly.. It may be time for you to Man Up - get some tools, roll up those sleeves and do some DIY research on how you can do these repairs yourself. Start by looking in the DIY section of this forum or goto Youtube search or check out some of my how-to vids (on my channel) to get feel of what's involved. And, if you need more pointers we're all here to help. NOTE: Remember this > You must bleed your cooling system after any major cooling system work. Don't ignore/skip this procedure.. Just a friendly heads up. |
