battery light problem.

the battery light keeps coming on and off in my 2002 325xi, but has been staying solid for a while now. (more than 15km trips it would turn on, and on start up it would for a few minutes than go away)

now according to the manual and a few google searches the battery light means that the battery is not charging.

so i did a simple volt test, and i get a reading of 12.4 with the car off, and 13.7-9 with the car running, and most accessories on (heated seats, heater, stereo)

i will be pulling it out saturday and taking it to part source so they can check the diodes and amperage of the alternator.

no flickers of the dash lights, or odd warning signs that the alternator is on the way out. (had one go in a sunfire when i was 18)

tested both under the hood and in the trunk.

any input on the e46 gurus?

Sounds like an alternator issue. Have you tested that?

this weekend i am taking it in. my guess is that one of the diodes is pouched in the alternator causing the error.

You really need to load test it. It will tell you amperage (more important than volts). Besides it can be done without removing thr alternator.

update,

i took the alternator out, and was tested.

test came back fine, alternator okay.

the battery light came back on, and i put the car into sport mode, took the motor to red line in first, battery light went off, and stayed off until the next day. Did the same thing, and battery light turned off again.

my guess is that the rotor isn't spinning as freely as it should.

if you're getting "12.4 with the car off, and 13.7-9 with the car running" that should mean the battery is good and being charge too..

I went through 3 alternators in 4 weeks while trying to diagnose why my battery wasn't charging... all were remans from autozone and all kept testing "OK". I became suspicious of the autozone units and went with a OEM alternator, and it's been working perfectly ever since...

Stupid question, but have you checked the belt routing? I replaced a belt on my old m50 powered 525i and routed it incorrectly (over the idler between alternator and water pump) It never so much as made a squeak, but the battery would drain and the battery light would dimly come on.
