M3 Convertable Top

I just purchased an 04 SMG M3 convertible. The car came with the hard top. I didn't really care for the look so I sold the hard top to a fellow M3 owner and allowed him to take the hardware kit from the car. now the top seems to not be working and the red light is flashing. I held the button down as the owner manual states but nothing. Does anyone have any experience with this and do I need that hardware kit for it to work. Thanks

are you trying to drop the top? cause you may not have the roof compartment clear in the boot, which would cause it to blink

I had this happen to me and the trunk wasn't closed all the way. Looked closed but the instrument cluster indicated otherwise.

THe times I've had issues with the top is when the car thinks the trunk isn't closed, which is just a faulty switch, and when the car thinks it's in gear.

Unfortunately I don't know a thing about the hardtop, so I can't comment. But I'm sure you didn't hurt anything.

I had the same problem after removing my hardtop. Softop would make clicking noise but make no progress in moving up or down. I removed the rear seat and pushed on the lid to the black box (has the convertible top motor inside) with one hand and pushed the top down button with the other hand. It worked perfectly! Turns out the plastic gear on the box lid grinds down over time and the link above has an awesome diy to help provide a fix to the issue.

*You ultimately wrap a hose clamp around the box with dowels or something equivalent wedged between the clamp and box lid. I hope this helps.
