Got a flat...

Ok so I definitely jinxed it with that thread yesterday...Went to the doctor's today and heard a hissing sound coming from the rear driver side tire, so I drove to the nearest gas station to see if he could plug it since I was about 15mi from home...looked under the car and the inner tread was completely shredded, yet the tire was still holding some air. I had him pump it up full and drove home with my hazards on, didn't go more than 45, avoided every bump I could. The tire actually held air until I was just going up my driveway, then I could hear the "flat tire" sound (whup-whup-whup). My biggest priority is the wheel since I just ordered 4 new tires...even though I didn't hear any grinding or anything like that (I was listening with the window down very closely), did I possibly mess up the rim? Or since there were no extra noises and the tire wasn't completely flat till the last stretch, will I be fine?

thanks,
Nick

Your wheels will be fine. In the future check your tires regularly. It is a safety issue.

Really? How are we suppose to know?

If you ran on the wheel, there is a chance it was damaged...enough to be beyond cosmetic, how would we know?

LOOK at the wheel, if there isn't any or much cosmetic damage then it obviously didn't contact the pavement much which would lead one to believe it isn't damaged enough to cause any concern.

Sorry if that comes across rude...I guess I'm just realizing how old I am and how stupid the next generations are becoming if they take the time to post something like this INSTEAD of just looking and checking out the darn wheel.

Looks like someone doesn't know what a spare wheel is.

No it's alright man, There wasn't any damage to the front, but I don't have a jack, and it was night, so I didn't have a chance to get a good look the inner part of the wheel. I just wanted some fanatics opinions before waiting for the guy to put the new tires on, so I could sleep easy tonight!

Thanks for not getting your panties in a bunch about my small rant. I hope everything checks out well with the wheel and you get on cruising and having a good time. As others have said, based on your description, it doesn't seem like you ran on bare wheels so there likely isn't a problem. Check it out in daylight and confirm via a simple visual.

lmao I guess this thread backfired on me...my original question is acknowledging if the wheel could be damaged without me hearing any sort of metallic noise or grinding...

No, it should have been obvious if you were doing major/note worthy damage to a wheel (via sound, sparks, etc).

A bunch of cowards. Have you ever seeN those police chase videos?

No sparks no problem. :-)

Seriously OP, sleep well. If your wheels are damaged the tire guy will tell you when he installs the tires.

Depending on how the rubber shredded away from the tire, I'd honestly be more concerned about body damage as it is the more likely case when tires loose their tread.

Either way, doesn't seem like you abused the situation so you should be fine. Put on spare, drive to tire shop, get new tires on, go for rewarding drive in beautiful BMW.

EDIT: You don't have spare tire....well, recommendation is ofcourse not to drive it to the shop, find alternative transport to get atleast that one wheel there, even if it means simply walking to shop to get a new tire by lugging a wheel around town! Haha...do post pictures though if that ends up happening.

lol, I had to, it was funny.

If your wheel is damaged, I'm sure you'll find out when the tire guy tries to balance the tire/mount it.
