Best AR15 for cheap

Anyone had any luck with cheaper AR's? I really don't need to spend a lot considering how much I will get to use it. I'm seeing them going new for as cheap as $500-600. I realize if you want a seriously nice name brand one you can pay $1500+, but I do own an E46 and it regularly drains my wallet so I'm stuck with an entry level gun. Or used.

Check out those S&W offerings. They tend to run pretty well, and can be had for fairly cheap.

You could build your own.

If you're going to build your own, buying quality components is ideal. Going for the less expensive economy components right now still isn't a great idea. The market is still cleaning out the mass-produced low-QC components that a lot of companies started pumping out during the gun panic.

The cheapest option that is still worthwhile is the S&W M&P15 Sport @ $623. The next step up is a standard configuration S&W M&P15 in the $800ish price range. After that, it's up to the Colt 6920 and Sig M400 for the $1k price range.

m&p sport.

if you get more into shooting or your needs change you can always modify the rifle or switch out the upper with something else.

What about starting with an 80% lower?

good for someone who is planning on building something they'll keep for life. Bad for someone who's new to shooting and/or unsure of whether this is going to be a life-long hobby.

Last Summer I bought an ATI AR-15 for around $560 on sale. I have not had any issues with it functioning at all, and is more accurate than I am capable of. The only thing that has been an issue is the gas block. It came with a short gas block, which means if you want to add iron sights, you'll need a tall front sight or change the gas block so you can use a short front sight.

Most quality receivers have a hard coat that goes 2mils into the metal to ensure hardness and durability. That, or a NiB coating. The problem with 80% lowers is that you don't have this in the areas you have to machine. Thus, you have to either have to coat it correctly on your own, or send it in. That just costs more money. In the end, the cost savings isn't there. Thus, the only reason to do an 80% lower is because you just want to try, and you have machining skills (besides nunchuck skills).

That, or you want something without a serial number or FFL transfer. But, that's sort of irrelevant when you own a boat and tend to forget where you lose things...

That's very true. I haven't looked into it for an AR lower, honestly, but I know anodizing shops around here in Houston have a $100 price for a minimum order for hard anodizing, and I've never come close to meeting the minimum.

Although I've gotten lucky with my DPMS upper and have had no issues contrary to what people may say, runs all day and have had 5k rounds through it so far. Accuracy is very good.

That said, I'd still go with the S&W

Just picked up an M&P sport today for $560. Local gun shop sells them for $620 and magpul pmags for $22. I drove an hour away to get the gun for that price and pmags for $10.68. Can't beat it for the price.
