Invasion of the M5s?
So I was at a gas station today and saw a guy with a black M5, great condition. I gave him a thumbs up, gives me a knowing nod, drives off. About 10 seconds later, ANOTHER black M5 pulls up in that same place spot at the station and it's a hot blonde chick. I look around and it's not the same car, as the guy's M5 I see driving off. What's going on here?

E60 M5's have hit low $30k's as they come off warranty. People that actually drive their cars are buying them.
Even I picked one up. ![]() ![]() ![]() They are heavy, but so comfortable, and the sound is just amazing. Still, I miss my E46 M3 . Last edited by keca10; 01-26-2011 at 02:26 PM. |

+1 I'm thinking about picking one up this summer but the maintenance is putting me off. Not entirely sure what to expect as this is the first time I've seen this engine.

i do have to agree with you both on that one, something about a new car that cost as much as a decent house and maintenance would be a pita, just think if the tranny or smg went out or something stupid like that

That V10 symphony.
I'd love to own one but maintenance would scare me off in addition to 500HP that could kill me.

Engine was watered down F1 technology plus smg3. Plus 5 series parts already cost more than 3rd parts, let alone a M.
I wish. But not on my salary. |

Been a huge fan of the e39 M5. Never drove one though. Heard they are one of the most expensive M cars to maintain, but not sure how accurate that is.

dont know, the v10 and the new M3 v8 are too young to tell, altho the S62 is known for leaking a lot and stuff, but id guess its about right.

well, for one you need 9 quarts of TWS oil for the V10, compared to 5.5 for the M3, if I remember correctly.
Biggest expense on the M5 is the gas mileage. I am getting 9-10mpg. That adds up! Tires and brakes are ~2000, while e46 m3 was about 1500 (dealer prices on brakes, ~500 less if DIY). So maintenance costs are higher, but not that much more compared to the E46 M3. Also, no valve adjustments required .Only thing is E46 is an easy DIY car, E60 is not. You have to program it even if you change the fancy battery that it uses (dealer job). So, yeah, even if nothing breaks, it is still a pricey car. M5s seem to be pretty reliable for how crazy they are. I got an extended warranty in case something on it dies. It's a daily driver for me, even in Minnesota winters (what's the point unless you are gonna drive it a lot). Prices are low since not many people are willing to pay so much for maintenance, however if you get into it planning and knowing the costs involved then it's not so bad. Nah, you were slowing down for yellow/red light. I was driving an old beat-up buick so don't think you'd remember it lol. Anyway though when the snow melts for the most part, if you ever see a Black e46 M3 w/ VA plates running around its either me or the fiancee so give a wave!
