how to push a dead X5?

Hey y'all--

A friend on another board posted this question. I don't know the year of the X5. Anyone know the answer?

A few times in recent years I've stopped to render assistance to someone whose vehicle was broken down in a lane of travel. The most recent example was today on my way home from work - passed an X5 that was stopped in the 3rd lane on a busy 4 lane road. I pulled into a parking lot about 100yds down, then walked back to try to help the guy. The vehicle was dead - barely enough juice to keep the hazards flashing. It had died in drive, and of course like most modern automatics it basically has a joystick for a shifter, so without any juice it wasn't doing anything.

Is there anything one can easily do to a modern automatic to get it into neutral? If you push hard enough, could you move it even if it's stuck in drive? (I tried a little bit, and the X5 would rock back and forth, but I didn't try to really push it.) Or is the only real option to wait for a tow truck? I felt bad, because I just left the guy sitting there in traffic, as I didn't know what I could do to help.

Is there a shift lock near the shifter? Our Honda oddeyzey has one and you unlock it, then you can shift into neutral even if the car is dead
