Anyone familiar with e36 wheel speed sensors?

Looking at a well-priced e36, completely swapped suspension/diff/brakes to M3 model but does not have the ABS/DSC speed sensors installed yet.

Not familiar with ABS/DSC issues and trying to figure out the specifics, the most I know is there is a wheel sensor on each corner and a VSS in the differential. Are these just simple plug and play sensors or is it a complicated/costly install?

Lastly what is the full purpose of them? Will ABS simply not engage at all without them?
