Clear the fault and see if it returns. This was what BMW used to tell us. If it returns you will probably need a DME. There are some companies that rebuild them and sell rebuilt units. Google will help you find them. Look for BMW bulletins about this or ask the dealer to look for you. There is one pertaining to this. One of my own X-3's had this issue and I had to get one. I bought it as a non running car and that was the issue with some other faults.

Did you check your battery yet? I'd bet its old and failing, causing electrical/electronic issues.

i'm having this issue, i disconnected my battery for 2 days. still doesn't start even with a 2nd key. same issue, my dme is bad i guess. but i heard that if i buy a used DME, EWS, and KEY it will start right up if i swap them, not sure if it's true but i might go that route if someone can confirm this, thanks

Yes, it would start up, but the EWS is registered to another vehicle and you would have difficulty obtaining a new key when you need it.

Just buy a used DME and have a shop code it to your car.

Little to no useful info you are posting here other than the car does not start with a 2nd key.

Then you think the DME is bad "my DME is bad I guess" and want to replace the DME, EWS and Key, this is like killing an ant with sledgehammer.

How about a bit of background with a clear description of what is happening if you want any useful responses and ideas?

Hi Guys
I have a problem with the e46 that sounds pretty close to this one, it would intermittently not crank. It's getting worse and now very hard to start. I've plugged it in and worked out that it was not getting the key code (Diamond shaped keys).
The 'key number' reading would fluctuate with random numbers flashing up, some in the hundreds, even though I believe there are only 10 key IDs stored.
With the key held in a certain position it would settle on 'key 1' and verify it and the car would start. Thinking the antenna was weak, I've just replaced it and no change. Both keys sometimes fail to work although sometimes trying the other key works, but seems to just be pot luck, not conclusively one bad key. As the key transponder is not battery dependant, would the expensive new key option be a waste? Neither key has been opened and both remotes work well.
I did initially see immobiliser faults when scanned ages ago, but these haven't returned while the problem has got much worse. I think the only one was in 'engine' and was immobiliser timeout.
The vehicle battery is not too clever but quite capable of starting the car when it feels like it!
Any ideas would be appreciated!

Keith

"Vehicle battery not to clever"

If you have any concerned about the battery, I would replace that long before I would dive into anything else, cheap, easy and quick and it could be a contributing factor. Stable and good battery Voltage is important for modules to properly communicate and function correctly.
