help on molding

Hey im going to make a custom lcd in my dash..underneath the ac control and cd player..where the ashtray and blank bay is. I was wondering if anyone could give me any help. I know that i need to use fiberglass...but i was wondering if everyone made a mold before hand. I plan on taking the lcd..and mounting it in the middle of the area..next taking some type of material..or newspaper and justmaking the outline around the lcd..but im not really sure what to use to make the outline. Then putting a thin layer on the news paper or whatever i use..making sort of a mold. Then taking fiberglass and pouring it into the mold. After that i would make some desings or cut out little areas where buttons are whatever..but i just need soem help on the basics of it..kina like the material to make a mold..other then that.i got it undercontrol..let me know if anyone can help

thanks alot

Jason

I had mine done at a local shop. I can't remember all the specifics, but he roughly told me how he did it. I put an URL to some pictures of my setup below.

First, I think my installer used ABS--not fiberglass. He used the original cluster (sunglass holder, ash tray, and buttons) as a template. He approximated it for size first, then bent it along the same angles as the original cluster. Then he polished off the sides to get a tight fit. He then roughened up the surface with some medium grit sandpaper and painted it flat black to match the texture/color of my black interior.

I think you can do this with a Dremel and hot air gun. In any case, he said the whole process was a *itch--measuring out holes for the LCD screen and buttons, getting them to be on center.

Good luck!

yo thanks alot.thats actually a really good idea..however..did he take the original pieces and put some type of surrounding over it..to make a mold or something..or did he just free hand it and mold the abs...so basically once he made the whole thing..he used a sander and then painted it black?..thats actually a really good idea..and by the way..looks great ...which monitor is that by the way

He sorta freehanded it... when you heat up that ABS, it's moldable. He put it up against the original cluster to get the bend just right. So he basically used the original cluster as a mold.

I don't know if that makes any sense. I'll try to spell it out... if you put the flat piece of ABS over the cluster, then heat ABS, the ABS can be worked into the same curvature as the original cluster.

The monitor is an Alpine TME-M760.

yeah i get what your sayin except i may do somethin different..i may just use like abs plastic spray to make almost like thin plastic mold...so then i can just let it sit and harden..then just take it off..and stick in fiberglass to make the exact mold. Could i make the same type of finish as the ABS is with fiberglass...matching the other units..thanks
