New Member and M54 330 race car rebuild.

Hi all.

I just started a new project and want to share it with you.
First, let me introduce myself.
I'm Marc-Andre, I live in Quebec City, Canada and I'm a computer tech support at www.qsl.com

So one of my friend presented me to this mid 50's guy who raced in Dirt Track in the 80's. He just bought a 330 coupe for the Canadian Touring Car Championship, with a blown engine. So when I met him he already had the engine rebuild by SDP Autosports in Trois-Rivieres, Qc. He showed me the repair bill......OMG over 10K$. I then told him, I don't understand why, then I took a look at the hand written , non detailed bill( Basically, new crank, 2 rods, new oil pump). Yes the bill was 10750$

I then proposed him to build him a new one because he didn't want to deal with these guys anymore.

Dealing with Tony from VAC for close to 10 years , I called him right away to order the parts.

Basically, it's pretty much wide open for the rules in this series, exept for the displacement(Limited to 3 liter) and single 70mm TB.

The goal is 300+ WHP and 240 WTorque. Max rpm 7200

So here we go:

VAC Cams (unknow lift & duration yet)
13:1 CP Pistons
Arrow Rods
VAC Stage 3 Head ( Inludes SS Valves, Ti retainers, Ported , CCed)
VAC Steel ML Head Gasket.
ARP Fasteners
Edit: custom modified pump and baffles
M52 Modified Damper (to fit M54)
VIPEC V88 EFI
Edit: Supersprint E36 Euro M3 headers + Bimmerworld M3 E46 Race exhaust system
will run with Elf Perfo 105 racing fuel(16% oxy)

Pics of the actual engine with the custom SDP Intake wich is a nice piece.

The car is really nice with lots of good parts on it but it needs a little details and attentions:

So I'll keep posting updated as the project goes along.

Marc-Andre

Nice Car

A word of warning: re-think your oil pump situation.

What happened to that engine that caused the rebuild was the oil pump shaft failed. It will happen again unless you go with the BMW Motorsport solution, or dry sump. I've tried the VAC piece, and I know lots of Koni challenge engines that have tried it....and it fails.

If you want to trust the VAC pieces, get it in writing from Tony that VAC will pay for the rebuild when the oil pump shaft fails/sprocket spins off.

I followed the installation directions to a "T", and I know others that have as well and ended up with the same results....the oil pump shaft nut comes loose, and eventually the oscillation of the sprocket kills the shaft. Welding the nut on is a short term solution that eventually ends in the same place.

All the rest of your parts list is great!

That part from Turner is what I use. I have never had an oil pump failure either.

Contact me via PM if you're interested in an upgraded oil pump not listed.

I'd recommend re-mounting that fire pull, mount it to something more solid. Also, I'd put some SFI or FIA padding on those door bars and foot protection bars.

I had the secret squirel hook up. Dave (Bimmerworld Chief Mechanic) knew about a complete spare exhaust still NIB from the E46 World Challenge program, and James did me a favor. The Muffler on the back actually came off of one of the World Challenge cars, because they didn't have a spare. (This was in 2007, 2 years after they stopped racing the E46s) I would suggest contacting Kromer Kraft directly for this item.

The TMS kit is what's been recommended to me, and there's also another less expensive option mentioned above by Greg, but it's not as comprehensive as the Motorsport solution.

That cage work in the car almost looks like it was built by "Raven"? Am I close?

Kromer doesn't take new customers(as per what they say on their answering machine)
I guess I'll go with the Supersprint M3 E36 Euro headers. I have bought one of these for an other customer car and it was a really nice piece and gave really good numbers. It fits with minor modification(Porting done by Tony)

I've been offered a complete modified pump(ALA Grand Am teams) I will look into this.

Cage was done by Marc-Antoine Camirand's father(Production Le Carossier)
Its really nice.
My customer has its eyes on a MS shell already, so plans are to use this one for this year, and the new one next year(He's more afraid of the end of the world than the end of the month )

Thanks for all the advices guys!

Salut,

La machine sera en piste ce printemps, et sûrement au GP3R, voire même la Indy Toronto.

Thanks for the compliment!

Some work have been done last weekend. Got the scary engine out of there,

and removed the rear subframe to take a look if the reinforcement has been done to the shell.

Answer is no, and almost all the bushings are still rubber, so I ordered all of them.
The headers(unknown brand) were butchered to fit a "Y" pipe and some flex pipes.

That was stupid of the previous owner since the engine and gearbox are solid mounted.
The muffler is a Magnaflow that seem pretty restrictive.

The Bimmerworld E46 M3 race exhaust system is on it's way and should be here in a couple weeks along with the SS E36 Euro M3 headers
Some parts I ordered also came in but I keep that for an other update.(Hint, Turner)

Can you invert the shocks?

Upon closer inspection, has the lower shock attachment point been moved?

I course I will. It's something they didn't know I guess.
It seems they added have a lower attachment point, could be useful next season, since there is a 2 in. only ground clearance in the CCTCC rules.
