Thanks for the input on my build. For the trigger I was thinking about saving some cash now as that can be changed easily. My primary concern is with the upper. I'll still have to pin and weld any muzzle device per NJ laws. Please bear with my basic knowledge...Would a two piece rail be able to be removed with a "permenant" muzzle device? Is it the barrel nut that won't pass over the muzzle device?

I would still advocate buying a 16" middy, as it's going to be more tolerant of varying loads. If you buy a pre-built dedicated upper with everything already attached like the rail and whatnot, a 14.5" setup is a good option if buy from a reputable manufacturer like BCM or Noveske. You're in a unique position where you have to pin/weld the muzzle device anyways, so in that respect, barrel length is sort of a moot point. If you do get a 14.5" setup, make sure to get a standard carbine buffer, not an "H" or "H2". For the 16" middy, you can do either a standard or "H".

Thing is, if you buy at 14.5" setup, BCM will pin/weld that prior to shipping unless you tell them otherwise. The barrel nut generally doesn't fit over the gas block, and the gas block can't be pulled off due to the muzzle device. That's where you get held up. The same with a fixed FSP. Rails will fit over no problem.
The other way to mitigate this issue is to buy a railed handguard that works with the standard mil-spec style barrel nut design. Things like the DD Omega and what not.

With the UBR on the back end and Fortis on the front, does that front end basically feel weightless?

The pig is like a lead weight on the front end. So it feels pretty good, plus the barrel is a stainless steel match barrel. I actually like the balance it feels really nice in my hands.

Just ordered a White Oak 18" Varmint Upper...bad news is it's an 8 month lead time. Anyone have a line on an in-stock complete upper that's a little more bargain basement but still decent quality?

I loved the Sniper Grey on the Glock, so I had to go that route.

I just finished TD1 of a 2-day carbine course (and than drank some beer), and just wanted to share that the lone DPMS went Tango Uniform (shocking!!!).
Proof positive once again that if you put garbage in, you get garbage out. At least they're consistent(ly bad).

Any suggestions for a muzzle device that has the same dimensions as an A2 but does not need to be timed?

What kind of muzzle device do you want? Comp? Brake? Flash Hider? And why don't you want it timed?

It's for a dedicated suppressed SBR so it doesn't matter.

I see your edit and I raise you an edit.

Because I'm lazy.

Why not just get a threaded suppressor threaded for 1/2-28?

He has a halo already I believe that's the one.

Options I think work with your suppressor
Bcm comp
Pws fcs556
Vltor vc-1
Battlecomp 2.0

Correct, I already have a Halo.

BCM, BC, and PWS all need to be timed. I hadn't thought about the Vltor VC-1, that may be a winner.

So, oiling/lubing the buffer/spring/tube. A go or no-go? I've read arguments on both sides.
