Is there any benefit of going with a free float front rail over a drop in or something like that?

Yes, very much so.
Drop-in rails trasmit heat faster and will get hotter than free float rails. Additionally, and ever more importantly, drop in rails allow you to deviate your barrel and change your point of impact (POI). If you pull or push on a drop-in handguard, you are applying pressure to the barrel and can cause it to bend ever so slightly under pressure. This won't make any difference at 25yds, but at longer ranges like 100yds and beyond, you can start to see a variation between intended POI and actual POI. Also, running a sling attached to the front sight post or rail is a NO-GO as well, as it can cause even more barrel deviation. The best is to run a free float rail, and use a sling attachment option or device on the rail for the front sling attachment on a 2-point sling (if that's what you choose to run).
Also, drop-in rails do not have RTZ (return to zero) capability. If you have a laser module or any type of aiming device on the rail, it won't be zeroed if you take the rail off. Also, it won't hold zero because drop-in rails are generally not very secure and can rattle, rotate and move around.

it really depends on what you are looking for but check out some of TROY's or Daniel Defense's rail systems.

For inexpensive options that are high quality, I really can't think of a better option than Troy Industries. For under $200, they're the only brand that I would ever use.
I personally prefer Daniel Defense, and I know that LaRue, KAC, Centurion, PRI and several others are all excellent quality. They're all a lot more expensive, though. Troy makes a great real that's more in your price range.

Just got this in the mail today. Daniel Defense Lite 14. I can't wait to install it.
Edit: but I can't put it on yet because I'm still looking for a 16" complete flat top upper with low profile gb for it. Preferably Daniel Defence. I have an offer on one on ar15 com but seller is very slow to reply. If you have a lead on something let me know. Click image for larger version

I see the dd omega's are only about $70 more. What are the benefits I'd see for the extra 70?

Somebody can probably explain better then me, but the Daniel defense rails are extremely strong and you get amazing customer service in dd. google Daniel defense torture test and watch that video. The fit and finish will be great. I have a ris ii rail and love it.

My next rail is most likely going to be a Gisselle smr mkii and then either another ris ii or a noveske nsr

i have a DD rail on one of my rifles and it is one of the most solid, lightweight and good looking rails i have personally handled

sometimes it is worth spending the extra coin and having something quality and durable that will last you

Troys are good rails, but DD is just a little bit better. DD rails are very strong and rigid, both due to overall rail design, as well as the mounting attachments.
It's been my observation that Troy AR rails are essentially minimalist free float rail tubes with rails attached. Simple designs and simple attachments. Not a bad rail at all for a training or range gun.
In contrast, every Daniel Defense rail is designed from the ground-up to be a purpose-built rail system. They have different rail designs for different applications or shooters. Their rails are built as rails, and you can see the thought they put into each rail system they build. When I read about the development that went into the RIS II and LITE rails, for instance, I was very impressed because they designed them to work with the human hand and human body mechanics. Kind of neat stuff if you're a nerd like me.

The Omega rails are nice, and they're very easy to install. I think you'll be pretty happy with it.

Almost finished with my ar pistol build, and it so happens to be DD(upper). The rifle next to it is also DD, the same model as shown on the DD torture test. You made a good choice going with the omega rail King Kong.

All of my ARC mags have been very reliable, but I can't get them to seat on a closed bolt unless I download to 27rds. Pretty stupid. I don't run them anymore and they've been relegated to my spare mag box in the back of the closet in the Man Cave.
