What does this button do? *PiC*

When pressed it gives a very slight change in how the radio sounds. But what does it actually do?? Nothing about it in the owners manual..

It turns on the Harman/Kardon "spatializer" effect. Notice that with it on, there's a phantom center channel in the front, as if you had a speaker in your air vents. With it off, there is no signal processing and all the speakers function as normal speakers.

Ya!! When i pushed it, it sounded like the sound was coming from the center somewhere. I was looking for a speaker somewhere in the dash for quite a while haha!
Is this otherwise known as the DSP button? I want to order a PhatBox but if my radio has DSP i need to also order their DSP kit to hook it up. Lemme know thanks!

I don't know whether the signal is processed digitally or not to achieve the spatializer effect, but when phatbox refers to "DSP" in the BMW, I believe it's specifically a DSP option in the nav/radio. You can find the option on E39 5's and E38 7's, but not on E46 3's. The DSP function allows you to select a simulated sound environment (Concert Hall, Stadium, etc.), and not much more. Suffice it to say that no E46 has DSP.

It's a matter of personal opinion. I usually don't like spatializer functions because they're not created for all environments and tend to make things sound weird. However, in the E46, the environment is fixed and the speaker locations are fixed... and they did an awesome job of creating the sound field with the spatilizer. I prefer it on.

to the best of my knowledge, it gives your subwoofers in the back (for H/K audio system equipped cars) a boost...

It has nothing to do with subwoofer and it is not DSP. The button as mentioned before is the spatializer button.

If you listen closely, you will notice a couple of bad things associated with having this button on:

- There is a bit more distortion and loss of clarity...especially in the mid-bass frequencies.

- The soundstage gets pulled way back and down. I was having enough problems with front stage imaging, but this button makes it way worse. Sure, music no longer sounds like it eminates from the doors, but it sounds like it's coming from the very center of the car between the front & rear seats!
