If you want to hear your cars engine rumble just install a cold air intake. It sounds good on the outside and the inside and you might even gain hp from it unlike a noise maker. Nuff said

The performance intake gives you an additional intake sound which I enjoy.

Not sure if I would want more intake noise than what I already have.. although slightly more exhaust noise would be nice.

That's okay, don't ask me what I think!

I got the same thing for $7.63; it was so easy and I can't believe anyone paid $100 for it.

You just drill a 3" diameter hole in the firewall just behind the clutch pedal.

Get a 4" section of 2.5" diameter PVC pipe and fill it with 8 kazoos. Squirt caulk inbetween them and around the pipe to seal the gap in the hole.

When I hit 40 mph, the wind starts playing the kazoos and it adds a nice resonance to the entire bmw driving experience. Nice!

Aftermarket CAIs are garbage - they do nothing but suck in hot air and make the ICV dirty. They simply filter less. I want to keep my airbox and filter oem and enjoy added sound. Also, a CAI is more expensive. Real cold air intakes also induce a risk of hydrolocking. This just seems like a better idea.

Delmarco - the z4 is a convertible too. Oh and btw the golf tee mod does nothing but add drone. It doesn't sound better. The stock exhaust is simply too quiet. I have a zhp muffler anyways - and I still want a real cat-back.

Doug - I think you can agree it's better than crappy aftermarket stuff. At least it's oem.

LIKE! LIKE! LIKE! LIKE! I was considering this as well. Can you post a vid. How much did it improve handling?

I've got the BMW Performance intake and Supersprint ss on my E46 and it sounds nowhere near as good as my Z4 with the sound generator. No drone, just hard edged intake growl when you're really pushing it. Under normal driving it's quiet. When I'm caning it, I'm not talking to friends or listen to Bach at that moment

Ugh, I had no idea BMW did this. Almost as bad as adding fake engine noises to an electric car.

I want my car to be loud because it's fast, not the other way around. This is the definition of rice.

You mean how the new m5 has engine noise coming through speakers? LOL this is nothing like that, the word "generator" is a misnomer, there's no fake sound being generated. Let me clarify what this mod is since it was never on the e46.

The sound generator is nothing more than a tube, STUFFED with FOAM that attaches from the intake area to the firewall. Since the tube is filled with foam from factory, you actually NEVER
hear anything! The actual "mod" is for those who already have this tube to remove some of the foam pieces so that the intake noise is louder. It's the equivalent of removing a center resonator from your exhaust system, less restriction and more noise. What it isn't however is adding some fictitious sound amplifying hardware. BMW spends a fortune on its sound engineers from iDrive dings and chimes to the resonance of the v8 exhaust system in trying to determine what's the ideal tone. In this case they tried to taper the intake sound but some of us prefer to remove that restriction by simply removing a piece of foam - don't see how this is "gay" or "lame."

This was me at Watkins, the wind is a bit loud but you can still hear the intake growl when I get on the throttle:

I think it sounds great, and I would totally do this if I was still driving my 325.

Oh, I get what. I just think that if you want the engine to be louder, you should get a louder exhaust (or intake, if you want the intake noise). I find it pretty funny that people are actually spending time and money trying to retrofit this to an e46. I'm not hating, I just don't see the point at all.
