If you're going turbo then according to a few sources yes. If a supercharger then stick with FI cams. Pei330ci would know more about this than I would.

Cams are in.

I took the car out for a drive and it hesitates up to 4.5k rpms. Is the timing off? Or could it be that the computer needs time to adapt? There is no check engine light..I drove for about 20 miles.

You could try pulling the battery connection which will reset the adaptions, but I think it could be that your timing is off =/

I just drove back from a friends house and now the car drives normal. This is weird.

Fyi not sure if it relates I forgot to tell you there's. specific way to start your car after removing cams to get oil around and primed of sort.. You have to crank it until the red oil light disappears on the dash maybe 10-15 seconds.. My car started right up with zero problems .. Good luck hopefully you figure it out

Ok so I got code p0014. I found this quote on bimmerforums "P0014 is the VANOS code, not the engine itself timing code (if there are such codes at all)".

Is this true? If so maybe a solenoid?

Timings off...

If you clear code it won't pop the cel until you restart...

Ya it really should run just fine right away. It may have adapted to run better in the condition it's in but as much as I hate to say it and as much as you probably hate hearing it, your going to have to tear back into it.

Took 4 hours or less to remove cams.. Took 2 days to get the new 1's in and timed because I had no idea what the hell I was doing lol

If you have the tools and follow the TIS it really couldn't be easier. The TIS lists every step in painful detail.
