SnowPlow vs BMW

Well, walked out to my car this Monday morning and to my surprise my car had a run-in with the local plow. Hit and run.. Monday = one of the worst days I've ever had. I know it was a plow because the tracks suggest it, no paint rubbed onto my car, and the damn plow went the entire length of my driver side, all the way to the back.

If you can, avoid a police report. That will just end up on the title of the car and what you get for it later on down the road may not be as much.

Good luck with the insurance and the shop. Usually hit and run type things go through pretty easily because there isnt much the insurance company can do. It could have been a city plow or a private plow, so you'll never figure out who it was.

Dont accept anything less than perfect from the body shop... if its not totaled. How much work has to be done do you think? Any suspension / drivetrain work?

a police report doesn't matter, if it's reported to insurance, it'll come up.

i got a police report because my insurance was requesting it. I was going to run this car until it pretty much dies anyways so I'm not too worried about resale or record anymore. I got it dug out after an hours worth of shoveling. The plow pushed me up over the curb once I got down to the bottom of the snow. I'm figuring a private plow but I will more than likely never know. After digging it out, I took it for a couple test drives gradually increasing speed and eventually ended up 60 mph on the highway (fastest snow on the highway would allow). Somehow everything 'feels' normal.

Ande2108:: It may just be a ton of cosmetic work. I figure: front bumper and other various parts, hood is fine I think, front quarter-panel, driver door, rear driver door, rear quarter-panel, and possibly the rear bumper. The snow and slippery road may have saved my drivetrain on this one, it seems normal. My suspension was pretty shotty in the first place and i had plans to redo that anyways. I have the CAs sitting in my closet already. Hopefully I still get the chance to use them.

I'd have to run mine to see, but I think it's the insurance claims. Anything you don't call the cops on isn't going to be a huge claim by insurance.

I'd be doing some investigation. Try calling the city and local plow companies to see who was on that street at what time. Don't mention your car got tagged (understatement, I know) until AFTER you found this information out.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news......but I speculate they might total it. Assuming you have damaged fender, bumper, front and rear doors, and quarter panel, perhaps the hood too? Add to that the cost of parts, paint, labor, blending, etc.

Insurance rule of thumb - If repair costs are 80% of wholesale value, it is deamed a total loss. So my guess, if your bill is over ~$5500 it could be a goner.

Just my two cents.

Thats nutz...sorry to hear....we use a two man crew so these instances dont occur.. you can find out who did this tho... all you have to do is go to the public works building ask to speak to a supervisor and see who was assigned to your street. they all have their own routes to cover. Thats how we do it anyways...... good luck...

Most insurance companies have different percentages for what point they consider the car a total loss.

Most crappier insurance companies have a very high percentage, say 80%, some of the really good ones start off at 60% I think

Just something to consider

Sorry for your loss man, hope it all gets taken care of
