7 or 8 quarts of oil

Does a 2002 325xi require an extra quart of oil and why? I went to the BMW dealer and they said it only needs 7 quarts for 6.5 liter capacity. Everywhere I look online it says get 8 for 7.5 liter capacity.

The XI does require an extra quart of oil. It is 8 for 7.9. Whatever BMW dealer told you that, never ever let them service your car!! I used to own an 02 325XI.

quarts (liters):

320i, 325i, 330i:
approx. 6.9 (approx. 6.5)

325xi, 330xi:
approx. 7.9 (approx. 7.5)

^^^^ straight out of the owners manual.

Why? Much larger oil pan that accommodates for the axles that pass thought it.

Please download a copy of an owners manual, if you cant afford to buy one and stop asking dealers.

Go ahead and put 8 quarts in. Then think of me when you're draining that extra quart out after checking the dipstick

Did you have to do that? Drain out the extra quart! Or did you never try to put 7.5 quarts in the first place!

How do you know that you actually drained all the oil out?

Did you measure it after you drained?

If not, then you're simply assuming that you did.

If the manual says Xi holds 7.9 quarts (7.5 liter) then it must be true.

This is based on the assumption that OP will be draining his oil out of the drain plug. It is virtually impossibly to drain *all* the oil from the drain plug and there will always be .5 to .75 quarts still floating around in there somewhere. Of course the manual states the engine holds 7.9 quarts but assuming OP uses the drain plug, IMO, I would count on the engine retaining a half a quart and and filling with 7 quarts therefore final amount would be around 7.5 quarts

edit: Also assuming OP is asking his question with the intention of doing an oil change

And where would that engine hide .75 quarts. You have the filter out and the oil plug is located at the bottom of the pan.

Crankcase. Only way I've heard to get it out is by using an extractor

annnnddddd Here we go again. This has been beaten ad nauseam. 04-05 xi's call for 6.9. 01-03 call for 7.X. Best bet. Fill it, check the level. Add as necessary. I dont know if they changed the oil pan or not, but my manual clearly states a lower numer than the older ones. Search for the other threads arguing about what the correct oil level is.....

edit.....

So I did some checking and a 2002 and 2004 have the same part number for the oil pan. the mystery deepens. I have only changed my oil once since I bought the car, and I believe I dumped in 7 quarts, measured it and called it a day. When i do my oil in the spring, I will do the fill and check method and see what I come up with.

Funny! I asked two different people in the service dept and they told me 7qts. I looked up the manual and online and it clearly states 8qts.
This is the PREMIER BMW dealership in our area. LOL
