I'm over at M3forum trying to find one myself with an automatic. Like the guy above said, its average, cars.com and autotrader have some but you know that the enthusiasts have them about a g or two higher than that. If its in good condition and all the maintenance has been kept up to date, its not bad at all. I'm trying to get into one but a sedan and they're hard to come by here in Florida. Keep looking for the one you like and what you're willing to pay. Cuz you get what you pay for it.

It's hard to find a clean E36 M3, don't just look at mileage and price. Just like E46s they have issues with RSM failing, rear shock towers cracking from failed RSM, S50/S52 tends to burn oil, cooling system is weak like on all BMWs, lots of interior electronics are funky light radio lights, mirrors, sunroof, etc. There's a really long checklist of stuff to go over..

I just bought a 98 dakar yellow m3, 5 spd, for 8000. It came with 167k. Sounds like a lot for the money, but the body is super clean, and the engine/tranny/wheels, shifting was absolutely perfect. Its not all about mileage, if taken care of right these cars will last a very long time. My buddy is pushing 285k on his and it runs like new. Now granted i also got 21 tires with my purchase, because i will be tracking it so that is about 3g in tires.

I bought a '95 Coupe with an AUTO a few months ago for $4000 from a indy shop near me. Has 110k on chassis and about 55k on motor he says. Swapped S52 from a '99. Guess some guy had them replace the blown motor and do a bunch of maintenance work on it, then couldn't pay. So they put a lein on it and eventually just wanted to get rid of it.

Body is super clean minus a small sap area on hood. Interior is 99% not even bolster wear. Plus its alpine on black, which is SOOOO much nicer than the ugly tan interiors. Only problem is the auto, which is why my girlfriend is driving it as a DD. Still, it pulls hard, shifts perfect, and is sitting on REAL LTWs! Good deal for $4k right? Needs front shocks, FCABS, and tie rod ends, they did rear suspension refresh already.
