My car did the same thing. It was the sucking jet pump that went out. It caused the fuel pump side to go empty at 1/4 tank left therefore burning out the fuel pump.

Had the same issue about 2 weeks ago. It was my fuel pump. If you drive your gas on "almost" empty a lot, it can cause the fuel pump to fail. That is what happened to me.

Is it harmful to drive with a failing fuel pump? I want to take the car to autozone (about 1/4 mile from my house) to get the CEL code(s). I know when my power steering pump failed my mechanic told me not to drive it.

It's not the fuel pump guys. Its the intake boot. A crack intake boot will cause all sorts of havoc b/c it's reading unmetered air and sending these incorrect readouts to the fuel pump. Fuel pump gets incorrect readouts and not pumping enough fuel thus starving the engine.

After a painful wait my upper intake boot came today. I installed it, turned the car on, and it stalled........I'm about to go insane! I cleaned the MAF, I replaced the upper intake boot (from a pretty thorough look with a flashlight, the lower boot it seems to be in one piece). I don't know what else to do.

I started the car, it idled rough, then hovered around 800 rpm. I tried giving it gas and it went up, but then would drop back down as if I released my foot off the gas....then stalled.

Taking it to a shop is my last resort. Any other ideas?

It still sounds like a failing fuel pump to me. Mines did the exact same thing before it fully failed.

I spoke with a mechanic this weekend and he said the possible problems could be the fuel pump, fuel filter, or a dirty throttle body. I cleaned the throttle body. When I went to start the car, it started for 2 seconds and stalled and now will not start.....go figures. So I finally manned up and ordered a fuel pump. It should be here on Wednesday.

Ill keep you posted

When it idles roughly and stalls, IT IS MAF/INTAKE SYSTEM MALFUNCTION
When it stalls when you accelerate at green light, IT IS CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR (CPS)
Get the codes first. You may as well replace MAF/intake boots and CPS intake/exhaust both.

My lower intake boot looked fine but my upper was shredded, so I replaced that. I also cleaned my MAF about a half dozen times within the past week. How sure are you? I'd rather not blow another 150 on a new MAF

Cleaning MAF is a part of maintenance. It won't solve the problem. Scanning with BMW GT1 will give you detailed result, even if SES light is not turned on.

Update.....more bad news:

Since my last post I have replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter. The car does not start. It used to start and run weakly for a few seconds. Now, not starting..... I'm running out of ideas. Any last suggestions before I take it to a shop?

make sure your fuel filter is not on backwards, arrows on filter towards the front of the car

First thing you had to do was scan the freaking ECU, that would give you a clear idea of what the problem is. I would say you have a bad CPS since my car does the same thing and that's the code I got P0344.
