Front End clunking during braking hard

Hi, I am new to this site, purchased my first BMW a little while ago, an 03 325CI, 105K miles, 5 speed triple BLACK, beautiful car, handles really well. When I brake nice and easy with no pedal pumping, I do not feel anything wrong, although, when I brake hard , loud clunking sound in the front. Mechanic says it's the whole control arm assembly (looks like a triangle) 300 ea. plus 2hr. labor, bushings included. I was wondering if it really needs the whole assembly of if I can just get the lcab bushings done instead, as I read an article in this forum about the lcab. I see that the bushings are shot. Also, if the price seems fair if I go with the whole assembly swap. Any help would be great. Thanks, and I'm glad to be a BMW owner.

the lcab are $100 a pair and is a simple diy. But if the control arms have never been replaced it is probably a good idea to replace if you intend on keeping the car for a while. They are less than $400 for the pair and take a bit more effort to diy. But it is nearly impossiable to screw up the job because both ball joints are on the control arm and not the knuckle like on some cars.

I would also suggest you check out the sway bar end links. Knocking sounds is often from this part and they are cheap and easy to replace.

Take your suspension rebuild to the next level. The front suspension on the BMW is prone to failure. After time, the front of your vehicle can clunk, make grinding noises, or wander around when going down the highway. The ECS Tuning Stage 2 front suspension rebuild kit has everything that you need to get your vehicle handling like it should. Includes all parts that commonly fail in one convenient package.

From ECS Tuning comes this level II suspension rebuild kit. This kit has been specifically assembled by ECS to include the 2nd stage of common wear items on your E46 BMW. Not only does this ECS E46 suspension rebuild kit replace those common wear items we upgrade your units with Meyle upgraded all metal ball joints & Meyle upgraded suspension bushings. Change the way your E46 feels & even upgrade further than parts available from your BMW dealer. These control arms feature replaceable ball joints. This ECS E46 suspension rebuild kit includes the following:

* Meyle all metal ball joint control arms (left & right)
* Meyle upgraded control arm bushings
* Meyle related hardware
* Sway bar link
* Left tie rod assembly
* Right tie rod assembly
