50w HID "upgrade" in OEM Bosch projectors. Explain why it's a bad idea.

Go.

driving d2s bulbs 35watt bulbs with a 50watt ballast overdrives the bulb. It produces more light at the trade off of shorter lifespan. Much shorter lifespan and the heat the bulb now creates also burns the bowls which now destroys your projectors.

Isn't the bi-xenon actuator being power by our OEM ballast? If so, upgrading to a 50watt ballast won't be a direct swap. I'm also not to sure how OEM Bosh projectors would hold up with the added juice.

well we were speaking about using a ballast to overdrive the OEM bulbs. if you get an aftermarket 50w bulb, it should hold up fine. like the philips dl50.

but you run into the issue of burning your bowls. if you've ever looked at your stock bowls right now, it's probably already oxidized/lightly burned.

It will ruin the projector with the extra heat.

I replaced my sick bowls with E46 replicas made of metal. If I get two years out of them with a high wattage system, I'd be tickled to death. The projectors were exactly like OEM, so I'm not really worried about them with the 35W system. I have a feeling they'll be okay.

oh, didn't realize you had a zhp lol well the OEM bosch bowls are made of metal, and they get the symptoms that i was referring to (the zkw bowls basically just melt/crack). it just takes a long ass time with OEM bulbs. it'll happen as a higher rate with aftermarket bulbs. i think it'll last a couple of years though. i would get high quality 50w bulbs since they tend to have a constant temp. crappy aftermarket 35w bulbs (driven with 35w ballasts) can still melt your bowls lol

It's not a ZHP.

I plan on using the Morimoto Five5 system with the Morimoto Five5 bulbs.

I'm still waiting on infinite12 to chime in.

Another note: I don't have bi-Xenon.

so you had stock single xenons which already have metal bowls and replaced them with replica's that have metal bowls? ok...

anyways, i think it will last as long as you want them to. since the bowls are replica's i'm unsure how it will hold up. i know for sure that with OEM projectors, eventually they will burn up. the rate just depends on the quality of the system used.

My old projector bowls got tarnished something awful and wouldn't polish back up. It was pretty bad. The replica projectors actually have a sharper cutoff piece in the assembly than OEM. Looks so much better! Now it needs more oomph.

yea, that's the heat. it does it on all the OEM projectors, it just takes a long as time with the OEM system.

have you tried getting better bulbs? like the 85122+ or CBI?

I've played around with countless bulbs. Light output differences are quite negligible.

yea i guess just go for it. if you're still on the original ballasts, then those would be the next upgrade aside from bulbs, cleaning projector lens, and new headlight lens. since the ballasts output less power as it gets older. but if you're upgrading them, might as well just do the 50w. unless you want OEM only.

I changed the projector lenses, repaved the headlight lenses, and (as you know) replaced the projectors themselves. I'll give the 50W setup a try when I get done extra money laying around. Worst case scenario, I go back to 35W. Best case scenario, my car erupts into flames and I can put the money towards something else.
