Strange, really annoying noise from engine?

Have this really annoying noise, had it since I got the car. It's nothing knocking against anything, nothing rattling, so I'm lost.

Can anyone identify this?

My car makes a similar noise that comes, and goes only when i just start my car for the first time. And its louder on the
driver side wheel well area. I was once told it could be the starter going bad, but i've never had any starting issues.
I hope somebody knows or have diagnose this before......

It doesn't sound like an internal knock. I wonder, does your car have the DISA like our US Spec cars? I honestly think it is something loose on the outside rattling around. Have you checked under the car, obviously with the ignition off of course.

Might have to try and find a DIY on it. I'll pull it apart and clean it up as part of the service I'm doing shortly, considering I'm having Idling problems, it makes sense. Any things I should be considering or being careful of that anyone knows of?

I would blame it on that 'aluminium' floor panel on the steering wheel.

Aight, got home from work, first thing I did was pop the hood, change and start pullin out that Valve. Only burnt myself a few times Definetly a replacement job, and definetley that Valve. That thing may be easy to get at in Straight 6 E46's but sure as hell not in mine!!!!! took my close to an hour just to get the damn thing out, had to pull half the engine apart just so I could get the Torx Key in there, still couldn't pull it all the way out thanks to the ABS Unit. I only needed another half a centimeter, might just pull the cover for the chip off, or if I can pull the chip itself off, that'll give me the space I need.

Anyway I've ordered the new part from Mike from http://www.thebmwpartstore.com/ cheapest I could find and he's helped me before.

When I get the part, I'll let post the results, might even see if I feel like doing a DIY for those of us who own the E46 318i's with the M43

Nice! At least you got it out. If you can make a vid on the process since we don't have a DIY for that part on the 4 cylinder engine.

Mind if I take pics and post captions and details

TBH I've never really done a vid before (which is sped up and clipped etc anyway)
