Cd to tape radio

Hello,
I have a 323ci with a cd radio my question is if i were to purchase an oem tape radio would it require any change in wiring / harness? Or is it just plug'n'play?

Depends on the year of the tape deck- if it's newer than 2002, you'll have to change the wiring for the antenna and the antenna module in the C pillar.

OP, it should be plug and play. Your car is a 1999 or a 2000 model year. I think BMW stopped selling E46s with the tape player in model year 2002.

OP, I got oem tape radio (2002 325i), but my knob doesn't work very well. if the source you're getting that one has an extra unit, just let me know. I'm interested in getting one with a functional knob.

Not true, but a common misconception- tape players with the "mode" button exist- it was a no-cost order option. One of the '06s I test drove had this rare beast, and it was definitely a newer unit, as it had an OEM AUX input installed.

so, are you saying that a Tape player with the mode button 'may' be AUX capable?

But, that rare head unit was in a 2006 car! BMW started putting head units with the aux input in the E46 in the 2003 model year. Putting a later version head unit into an early E46 requires added work and some cable adapters. Basically, the newer head unit, made by Alpine, has a single radio frequency (RF) signal input while the older head units have an RF input for AM and another RF input for FM. And, the antenna amp in the "C" pillar needs to be changed to the later version. No to fun.
