.22 Conversion in AR15
Does a .22 conversion cause any long term damage as far as accuracy and durability/reliability of the rifle when switching back to .223? The ammo I would be using is 36gr .22 Federal Champion HP's with a copper plating.

No for two reasons.
1: you are basically changing the whole upper 2: you are basically changing the whole upper

I never could understand doing this.
Is a good quality conversion not close to a regular .22 AR style rifle? (within a few hundred)

They are, but some want one gun, multiple calibers to use their trigger and other support pieces.
I agree, converting the upper is quick, but pulling out a different rifle is quicker.

I know CMMG sells some .22 bolts that some have reported good results with. You shouldn't be damaging your rifle by swapping between .22lr and 223.

I don't foresee any damage issues.

Ok thanks reedo. For those asking, the CMMG kit is only 134 shipped, which is much cheaper than a MP 15-22 or a dedicated upper. I would also like to use my optics and practice with my main gun, not a plinker.

Let me know how it shoots, I have a 1:7 twist on my DD and Ive heard that it can really mess with a .22.
Ive also heard that you need to shoot some .223 after a day of .22 b/c the .22 is dirty and might start to clog up the gas block and tube...

Results are G2G. Leaves a lot of burnt powder residue in the upper part of the upper, but nothing that a toothbrush and rag cant get out. Accuracy isnt exactly pinpoint, but I'd say I didnt see anything outside of more than 12 MOA at the absolute worst. Most were probably within 6 MOA of where I was aiming. I have been using 525 pack Federal Champions and running a bore snake every 100-200 rounds.
Initially I was getting some 3 round bursts and fail to loads out of the kit, but it definitely does have a break in time, and over the past 400 rounds I have had 1 stovepipe that was easily cleared. Everything else has been 100% even at rapid fire speeds. Fun little kit, definitely worth the $134 from the company I linked to.

I have one and its worth it, I just switch back to a 223 bolt at the end and let go a couple to just make sure the gas tube is clean(ish). If your really worried just buy a new upper and dedicate it to .22 only.
