Well, for me I can now proudly say I use Shell V-Power 98!! Caltex 98 did not agree with my 330Ci, for whatever reason which still eludes me.

Not too sure, but Dwaye's comments are correct. Not all companies have their own refineries in every state. For Instance, the Shell refinery in NSW services other brands also.

BP don't resell their Ultimate. ULP, 95 & Diesel are the national products across the brands.

After going through this thread. I did some tests:- 3 tanks of Vortex, 3 tanks of V Power and 3 tanks of Ultimate.

Same boring old route every day, part highway, part city. I used real consumption figures (not relying on the cluster)

With Vortex & V Power, I averaged about 10.1-10.2L/100kms. On the Ultimate, I get 9.3L/100kms.

I switched back to another tank of V Power and the economy was instantly back to 10.1L/100kms. After that I'm now currently on Ultimate and I'm back down in the low 9's. My car loves Ultimate.

That's quite an interesting observation. Maybe I'll try some Ultimate next time. I wonder why the consumption is so much better with Ultimate??

No idea, but it just seems to like it. It's like flicking a light switch.

Any noticeable difference in responsiveness/performance?

Not at all really. I couldn't pick the fuel that's in it by feel.

I have also been having cold start issues since filling up with Caltex 98 2 weeks ago. This is the 2nd time this has happened when using that brand. Normally I use Shell 98 without any issues.

I read somewhere BP Ultimate is 97 ron and not 98. Shell V-max when it was available, now just the v-power.

Might have been a bad batch or just a coincidence. I use virtually nothing but Caltex Vortex 98 in the Bimmer and have never had a problem with starting or performance. The "other car" uses Vortex 95 - never a problem there either.

"BP Ultimate Unleaded still has a minimum Research Octane Number (RON) of 98"

CortinaD, I agree thats what BP purport. If I recall correctly Topgear had tested all major pulps at an independent laboratory at Ultimate came back at 97.

not sure. Does BP transport Ultimate from its Kwinana refinery or import it?

My car has always liked BP ultimate. For the same fill(~59L) I get an extra 50km or so out of BP. Not to mention on average my area BP is the same price or cheaper than Shell for 98.

+1

I was a shell 98 guys for over a year in my 320, but on 2 separate occasions (months apart) I used Caltex 98 in camberwell (high fuel turnover) and just recently at the new Caltex on toorak rd. The new Caltex was open about a week before I used it, so I know the fuel was fresh, but still had the same cold start issues as I did using Caltex in camberwell. 99% of the time the car would bog down and stall on the first cold start of the morning. I would restart it and no problems...it was just the very first start of the day. I checked everything like fuel pressure, sparks, etc.

I went back to shell 98 and not one issue during cold start. Never using Caltex again. I have never tried bp but will be based on comments in this post. Will have to wait 600kms as I just filled up with v power.
