Getting some trunk space back (new system rebuild)

Just a teaser until I get a chance to post full pics & write up. I went from a JL 10W7 in a big sealed box that took up a lot of trunk space to 2 Image Dynamics 8" subs in the rear parcel shelf. I did not like the idea of doing an infinite baffle setup so I did a lot of modifications and did a sealed box that attaches to the rear parcel shelf and also made custom endplates for my 2 JL Audio amps so I was able to tuck them into the corner above the battery.

Here's 2 quick pics. More to follow in a few days.

Wow! I have been looking to do the same thing but with one 12" sub. Ive wanted to do it since December but the cold weather detered me... Can't wait for some more pics and info on how you did it! It looks very smooth!!

do you think the process is drastically different for a sedan with nonfolding seats because that looks banging

The only difference should be how everything comes apart. Never worked on a sedan with non-folding seats so I'm not sure how much more or less work it would be. You should have about the same space for everything though. It does make working in the trunk much easier if you remove the rear seats completely like I did.

wow that is very crafty how you did that! The box you designed is super tight. Couple quick questions:

1) How did you go about actually mounting the box in there? Im assuming you used sheet metal screws of some sort and simply drilled it in place?

and 2) Does the shape of the box not matter? Lets say your box specifies a 1 cubic foot area, can you make it very skinny and wide and it will be the same as a square or normal depth box?

Very well done though!

Thank you! Yes shape of box does not matter, only the internal volume matters.

The box is bolted at each end with long 3/8" nuts & bolts thru the parts of the box that stick out on each end. Then the center has a couple lag bolts from the top of the rear shelf into the center of the box just for extra support. It's attached very securely. I noticed immediately how much harder the bass felt in my seat than with the old sub which was not physically attached to the car (it was just built to fit tight).

Very nice! i like the slideshow. Where did you purchase the image dynamics subwoofers? and how do they compare to w7 you had?

I bought them from WoofersEtc which has an online store as well as an ebay store.
Initial impressions of them are they are punchier & have better midbass although some of this could be due to the change in location from rear firing box in the trunk to rear parcel shelf mounted firing directly into the car. As far as the output it is plenty for me. I rarely ever pushed the 10W7 to it's limits and so far the output of these 2 8s running off the same 500/1 amp is more than enough.

Nice work!

I'm curious...why did you avoid the "Free Air" option?

I ask because I'm running the same subs that way

Loving the trunk space it provides!

I prefer the sound of a sealed box. Also free air set up limits power handling capability of the sub and I wanted to keep my JL 500/1 to power the subs. How do yours sound free air? What are you powering them with?

They sound great! Only thing I'm still battling is some rattles/vibrations with the trim on "trunk rattling songs"...I didn't cut holes in the deck trim.

I'm running an older MTX 4200x bridged (~200w on each sub). I haven't used the o-scope yet to set my gains. The LOC is outputting enough voltage that I've got the gains set on minimum (8v) and still end up using the HU fader like a bass knob. Front stage is Zapco DC650.6 (180w on mids & 100w on tweets).

Very nice, I want to do this with my IDs after I install my components to the front doors first.

Did you re-enforce the rear deck since you cut so much away... or was bolting your box enough?

I think bolting the box in was reinforcement enough. I could have built the box a little simpler had I cut out that center section but I felt it needed that for support. Now that I think about it, I could have used some of the left over aluminum plate that I made the amp mount from to reinforce the rear deck. Maybe something to consider for the future if I ever have to pull the box out. For now I think it is very strong. No rattles, no flexing that I can detect.

Nice work! I always forget how big our trunks are until I take out my box before I head to the track.

OEM? Max is 2.54". You have to be careful on the magnet diameter though.
