Unusual dibilitating pain in my foot.

I woke up last Sunday morning with a slight pain in my foot. It got worse and worse to the point that I'm limping on my left foot today.

I'm thinking a stress fracture, but I'm hoping it was just from hitting my foot into something on Saturday (I got wasted.)

I have a slightly swollen, bruised and very tender area in the middle of the top of my foot, between my big toe and middle toe bones. Where C and B are in this figure:

Whenever I contract or spread my toes I feel a pretty bad pain in the area, as well as when walking on my foot. It has come to the point where I can't even go to the gym. Cardio isn't even an option.

Any ideas? I'm hoping I just pulled something in my foot and didn't break any bones For now I'm just icing it and wrapping it with a bandage to keep blood flowing to the area.

I'm going to MEPS sometime this week and I don't want this to be an issue in my enlisting process.

A) does it hurt to touch?
B) what kind of pain? Stabbing, shooting, tingling, etc.
C) so it gets worse during the day? Or it's gradually gotten worse and doesn't get better?
D) taking any anti-inflammatory?

A) Yes
B) Pain is shooting, very sharp.
C) It has gotten bad and has remained the same. Usually worse in the morning, though.
D) I just keep icing it, wrapping it, and I'm taking Aleve periodically.

ibuprofen and ice. Sounds like a jam or hairline fracture. Oh and never hope for a pull, always hope for a bone break.

Why's that? The last time I broke a bone I had to have it realigned with surgery and had a pin sticking out of my hand for a month or so. Casts SUCK.

Bones heal back. Torn ligaments and muscles are forever problematic.

I had pain in my big toe/foot for a couple months thinking it would go away. I went to a foot doc and I have some hallux abducto something where the bones are rubbing together. I have to have surgery where they grind some bone away and put a screw in to keep sh1t straight. I hope its not the same for you.
It hurts like a ***** toward the end of the day and I now cant drive a clutch without massive pain.

sounds like a stress fracture, except that stress fractures usually do not have a solitary traumatic incident tied to them (i.e. your drunk night of fun!). Stress fractures are more gradual / insidious in onset and are usually the result of a new training routine or change in equipment (i.e. shoe or running surface in the case of metatarsal stress fracture).

Stress fractures don't necessarily show up on imaging studies right away, but that is the way to diagnose one (bone scan, MRI, CT). I'd go for MRI since the bone scan result can be non-specific (meaning that the same bone scan result for a stress fracture could also be something else).

In the meantime I'd give it plenty of ice, which it sounds like you're doing. One of those foam walking boots for your foot will help if you don't want to get crutches. I'd give it 6-8 weeks before you're back to 100% (again, if this is a stress fracture).

Of course, doing a regular x-ray study first might be indicated to see if there is an obvious/large fracture. Then the other imaging studies (ahem... more expensive ones) wouldn't likely be needed.

we have no way of knowing what happened to you while you were drunk, so it could be something else also !!
