Seat Memory question

I tried to search for this but couldn't find the exact answer. I bought a new key FOB today because mine was dead and I needed an extra key anyway. Now when I unlock the door, the seats go to some position other than mine. Reading in the manual it states, "Your BMW center can adjust your vehicle's systems in such a manner that your personalized settings are automatically set for the seat and exterior mirror positions when you unlock the vehicle with your personal remote control". Does that mean I have to pay BMW or is there any other way to fix this? Coding?

Is this happening AFTER reprogramming the seat/mirror memory with the new key in the ignition using the buttons on the side of the seat?

What you're referring to is Key Memory, where the seats, mirrors, radio and climate control change depending on which key is used to unlock the car. Paying a dealer to change to Car Memory will eliminate this.

In the meantime you could probably set all the seat memory buttons the way you want; maybe that would keep Key Memory from taking over.

Interesting to see whether the seat memory buttons override the key memory. OP, report back & let us know how it goes.

okay here's what i tried, i started the car and reset all three memory positions (my gf is gonna love this when she drives me car again) to my seat and mirror preferences, drove around to get some Tim Horton's breakfast and came back. Locked the door and the unlocked and it still went to some other position. so it seems the key memory is overriding the seat memory

I'd go back to the dealer you got the new key from and explain the situation. You never know, they may extend some goodwill towards you & do it for nix. In Oz, if you buy something that is not of "merchantable quality", that is, it doesn't do what it's supposed to do, you are entitled to a refund/replacement under consumer laws. I suppose the same applies in the US. I wouldn't use that as leverage, though, until you've batted your eyelids and done the schmoozing thing first.
