Streets of Willow Springs yesterday, my first time driving it clockwise. I was slowly improving each session, and then in the 4th session several things happened
1) Had big tank slapper at 8:15
2) Can't downshift to 2nd gear at 8:30 and 11:52 (is it because I'm turning right?)
3) Ran out of talent and ate dust at 19:25 (spin)

I turned my fastest lap of the day, in there somewhere, putting me near the top, like 4th out of 25, in the Blue (low intermediate) group that day. But... my best lap time would have been 2nd to last in the Black (high intermediate) group and at least 5 seconds slower than the slowest driver in red (advanced).

I've had some similar experiences with 2nd. I've got to rev-match it just right or I grind the crap out of it. I never have a problem finding it. I have the vorshlag engine mounts which really made shifting much crisper and generally better...less drivetrain slop.

Good save...you know I fast forwarded right to 8:15

Thanks, I was so impressed with myself for the save at 8:15 that it made me overconfident and that probably contributed to my spin at 19:25.

When I had the shifting problem, it wasn't grinding, it just wouldn't go into 2nd. Unless I was so over-hyped that I went through the reverse gate and was trying to pull it back to gear -1 or something. This was on stock engine mounts (~20,000 miles and 20 months on them) and UUC black transmission mounts with TME cups. So my transmission mounts were "harder" than my motor mounts. Terry of Vorshlag posted somewhere that he recommends running the other way, motor mounts should be stiffer than tranny mounts. I had a set of BimmerWorld solid rubber motor mounts that I bought last October, so I put those in last night. They are stiffer than stock but not as stiff as the Vorshalg poly ones (not bolt-through).

Not sure when I can do another track day, though.

My Ride: E36 DD, E30 race car
85mph into a cement wall, Road Atlanta, Dec11

Some folks called this the hardest crash they every saw in club racing. The text associated with the video describes the details. Basically I slipped in coolant and when a moderate correction did nothing, went to brakes in an attempt to keep the car sliding straight down the track. That idea didn't work.

By the time the video shows oversteer I've already gone to brakes. The driver feels weight shift and movement long before a video can show them.

Warning, e30 content. Video may make you want to rush out and buy one.

Build thread for "New#6". http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum....php?t=1757926

A week after the crash I found an e30 that had been prepped for a different class a couple yrs prior, raced a couple times and than covered with a tarp for a couple yrs. So by mid Dec I had an ugly ducking with a cage and a sound drivetrain.

Most of the man-hours since have been on cosmetic issues, but I also replaced the front suspension and entire rear end. It will be on the track soon. I need some exhaust parts and all the wiring for the gauges and switches still has to be done. I'd like to get it on the track for some testing in a couple weeks. First race is in a month.

Re. looks like it hurt. It knocked the wind out of me so immed after the wreck I occupied myself trying to breath, and thinking about how sad it was that I killed my car. That car and I had been thru a lot together. I'd tinkered on it most nights for 5yrs. We'd been thru, for example, a lawsuit and 10 engines.

The distant corner worker clearly wanted an indication that I was ok, but I pointedly didn't give it to him. I was thinking it was time for an ambulance ride so I didn't want to give the corner worker cause to call it off.

Once I could get some air I crawled out and lay in the grass for a while. It was quite peaceful in the cool Dec afternoon with the warm sunshine on my face. Not a sound could be heard because they'd long since red-flagged the race and pulled everyone into the pits.

It would turn later that I'd broke a rib, but that was no big deal. Also, that car had a dash bar that ran under the steering column. My cage was stove in a bit and when I was flung forward my shin whacked the dashbar pretty good. In 3 weeks I was lifting weights and swimming again, but it took prob 6 weeks for my brawny he-man shoulders to quit aching from the wrenching the harness gave them, but there was no sense whining so up until now I'd kept that to myself. But what American-boy hobby doesn't result in a few lumps now and then?

Took my 04 zhp 330i out to it's first autocross at Qualcomm this past saturday. It did surprisingly well on it's crappy Nexen tires, however is what a handful because of said tires. Just adds to the fun I guess...

Is that an M3 I spy? When did you get that? Great driving by the way, I like the helmet cam view too.

Yes, it's a customer's car I built last year. At the last minute I mounted the camera on the right side of my helmet and it ended up hitting the right side net the whole time which was rather annoying. I won't be doing it that way again, at least not in a car with a right side net. I tried it on the left side end of last year(see 'dorifto' video) and didn't care for it that way either.

After some time away from the track, I went to Thunderhill in November and Buttonwillow last Sunday. The rain seems to follow me around now though we got one almost-dry session each day.

7 laps at Thunderhill. Thought I was fast because I was passing other drivers, but afterward video timing showed it wasn't that fast.

And then driving Buttonwillow in the rain with traction and stability control turned off. I loop it in the last lap and go into the mud. Driving one session in the low-intermediate group made me feel fast because I was one of the fastest drivers. Then I moved in high-intermediate and was consistently the slowest or 2nd slowest driver (of those who paid for transponders). And then there are two even faster run groups. So much room for improvement . You can see me lose it at 26:40 in this video.
