E36 330i SMG/SSG Reservoir location

Hi!

As per title - where is it?! Want to check the level... its a UK spec car. Ive been scouring the net for hours and can find plenty of "check the level" but no indication of where to check it! I have a reservoir at the front right (as you look at it) with a star shaped cap saying "ATF only" on it, but from what I have seen the reservoir is around the right middle of the engine near the inlet manifold, but I dont have one there.

Any ideas?

As you face the engine (from above), look to the 'top-right'. I believe that's where they put the reservoir on the m3 with smg, should be similar to any other model with smg.

Hmmm, OK I still cant find it. Here is a pic of my engine bay, and another up the top right area. I cant see a reservoir hiding anywhere.

I dont know, so I would guess and my guess is that there is no reservoir and the fluid is pumped directly into the SMG pump and there is no way to check the level just like there is no dipstick in the tranyy nor in the diff.

I could be wrong but I also could be right.

You need to lift the car up ... It's on the left rear side of the gearbox ... You will see the SMG/SSG reservoir ... Get a flash light it'll be easier to check the fluid level with the light ... Hope that helps.

p/s: Pentosin CHF 11s is the recommended fluid ... tho there are (better?) alternatives if you want to be adventurous

Yeah, you need to go under the car and look at a small opening on the left side of the gearbox. There you will see a see-through container with a plastic cap (with a 17mm hex wrench size). This is the filler cap. The fluid level can be seen through the reservoir.

The ZF smg has the reservoir on the tranny.
