GM A5S 369R transmission issues

Hi all, newbie here, but not to BMW-s,
My wife's 2000 323i wagon 135K miles with a A5S 360R, transmission, (5 L40 E) started to show the transmission warning light mostly when driven freeway speeds. Went into limp mode a couple times. Readout shows two faults "CAN wheel speeds" and "Gear monitoring 5".
My research tells me it is an indication of mechanical fault in the gearbox, possibly slipping clutches. I have changed the fluid and filter this week end with a synthetic Dextron VI equivalent and found the "lifetime " fluid dirty with a lot of sludge in the pan. Cleaned it all up and back on the road same problem. Before I accept the inevitable transmission rebuilt, I wonder what else I can try? Speed sensor? Which one?

Second question, could I replace the A5S 360R with A5S 390R, which can handle higher torque and I have one available near San Jose at a reasonable price?

Thanks for any advice!
