Power steering problem - 2001 bmw 325i

I will be taking my car in to a shop later today
But I want to get some feedback from the forum as well

My car had a bunch of things repaired last week
My 325i has 144k+ miles
One of the repairs was for my power steering - there was a crack in the power steering fluid reservoir (?) and I would hear some noise when I was in reverse and the wheels turned to one direction

Anyway
Yesterday morning I started up my car in the driveway... And I had no power steering at all
Had to struggle to turn the wheel
Then I realized it wasn't just not having power
It was like my wheels were steering locked
After struggling with it for a few minutes, I decided to just put the car back in the garage... When I accelerated forward the steering "unlocked" and everything was fine
But I didn't want to risk driving the car and left it sitting
This morning same thing happened again
Steering felt locked, struggled to make it down the driveway and turn the car around
Turned the car on and off several times... Then when I accelerated a bit once again the steering "unlocked" and everything was fine. I drove for 30 minutes, city and highway mixed, and everything was fine

Parked my car for about 30 minutes then came back
Turned on and no steering problem
So now I will leave the car sitting for a few hours and see if the problem reoccurs when the car is cold

Tldr summary - car feels like the steering is "locked" when I start the car in the morning. After a few minutes and accelerating forward the steering seems to unlock and power is restored
Happened two mornings in a row ... Will test if it only happens after cold start

Check fluid level.
If you have original LF-20 steering pump - remove belt and try to pull out the p/s pulley (these are a known problem).
Or, without removing belt: open the reservoir, suck out some fluid (to lower level) start the car and look into the opened reservoir. Check if you can see fluid is moving. If not - p/s pump is gone. Next step - ask someone to turn wheels and check movement of the fluid. If not - steering rack maybe gone.

My Ride: is totaled
I returned to my car after 4.5 hours... No problem
Parked my car for another 1.5 hours... No problem
Parked my car for 5 minutes to get food... No problem

I should still get it checked out
But I will wait til tomorrow morning to see if I can get the problem to repeat

Had similar issue with an '01 325i. Had the local Indy shop replace the steering rack. Solved the problem. If you use the steering rack from a late model E36 (which does fit), then you can get rid of the loose steering that BMW installed for the 2001 MY vehicles.

Did your steering ever lock up while you were driving? Or only when you cold start?
It would be a huge problem if the steering locks up while the car is speeding through a turn
