Tirerack.com PS2 find

Hey all, I was looking at tires and on the site there are PS2 for $272 a piece and PS2 XL for $189 a piece:

http://tires.tirerack.com/tires/Mich...0225%2040%2018

Maybe I'm reading something wrong but is there a reason 1 is almost $100 cheaper than the other?

Nick

Very good price for a Michelin.

apparently the Hankooks are really good for the 1st 40% then they go downhill, but the PS2s stay pretty constant thru the whole tire

Yokohama Avid Envigors are very good as well and they have a 560 treadwear rating (yes, even though each company rates their own tires)

Some vehicles are equipped with "XL" tires. No, it doesn't mean that they're extra large, but it does mean that they are extra-load tires. The load index on these tires is much higher than a standard-load tire which is why it is important to replace an XL tire with another XL tire.

Not a lot of cars that use XL tires, so lower popularity? Overstock? Could be a lot of reasons.

Its a Michelin. At that price, and especially since its a Pilot Sport, I wouldn't be skeptic.

Michelin plans to phase out many varieties of the PS2 now that the Pilot Super Sport is out. This could possibly be the reason for the low price you found or it could simply have been a data entry mistake.

Also, there's an entire sub-forum for tire related posts. It's even monitored by someone from Tire Rack who might be able to answer your question....

Mine are the XL PS2, never had an issue for the last 60000 miles they are on. I'd guess the Extra Load comes from additional sidewall reinforcing to support the "additional" weight of some vehicles?

PS2s are nice tires for sure. But they are old technology at this point and I think new models from other companies might have caught up. I'm not sure they're worth the extra $$$ over a set of Hankooks that I can pick up for around $500...

As a couple others have alluded to, our prices can vary based on many factors. Basically, if we get a great deal on a large shipment of tires we typically reduce the price and pass on the savings. In other words, the pricing we set is based on what we pay for the tires, not necessarily based on the tires performance. Sometimes this results in deals that may look too good to be true.
