Question E46 rev drop for good

Hi guys!

Before you say VANOS, please read below

The car:
- 2001 320i (170hp) saloon with manual transmission.

The problem:
- rev the engine (while in neutral) up to a point, keep it there, after 2sec the rev drops about 200rmp and it stays there (does not stutter).

This causes problems in 1st gear and mostly in reverse.
Because the engine is slightly revved when the rev drop happens, this occasionally leads to engine stall.

Got any ideas on what could cause this annoying issue?

Fuel pressure... so fuel delivery?

Pump or filter maybe?

When it's cold idle I assume nothing happens.

Eagerly awaiting a reply on this one too...
I've got a 2001 325ci manual, and it does the same thing.

Ask the car for 1500rpm in neutral (or more critically while you're trying to reverse out of a carpark...), and you get it for 1 second before it drops to 1300 on you, often resulting in a stall.

Otherwise it appears to drive just fine...

Mine did the same thing... It's normal for drive by wire.. Fix is sprint booster, it keeps the voltage up and doesn't allow it to drop.

Sprint booster is a joke that jump adds to the sport mode.

I love sprint booster. I lowered my 60ft times and my reaction time on the 1/4 mile. It also adds pep to the car and less pedal effort for the same effect. I rev faster then a normal e46 cause the dme its seeing full throttle before your foot hits the ground.

True that. It is faster shifting then to floor again but on the line i see no gain cause need to milk into throttle to get grip anyway. I ran a 13.56 quarter with stock manual. Just wondering what others are running?
