In car smell at obscure times

Hi to all members,

I am newly registered and hope to get some answers to a problem I have been experiencing with my BMW 1 Series.
At obscure times but more so when driving long distant, a peculier smell comes around and about the inside and the outside of the car.
Best described as like the smell of old cooking fat or candle wax burning.
This can ocurr at any time with the air condotioning on or off?
Can anyone enlighten an old chap of 74 to overcome this problem.
My dealer has checked this out when servicing and they cant come up with any answers?

Thank you for any response.

Hello Daveyboy!

So interesting and funny that you mention this... My kids have always commented that my car smells like a crayon at times too. I'm imagining the wax burning smell you're referring to. Although I can't say that the odor I have is the same, as it doesn't seem to be burning or melting, rather it just has the aroma of crayons, candle wax or what it really reminds me of is those wax mold animals we used to get at the zoo when we were kids.

I too have had it checked out by a service tech and so far no one has ever been able to identify it. Since it comes and goes and there can certainly be worse odors to choose from, I've written it up as one more of those things that makes my car unique.

Wish I could help, but perhaps some of the more experienced owners on here will enlighten both of us.

There is sound insulation behind the rear seat and on the rear shock towers. Remove it and the smell will go away.

I agree with FastHackem. That insulation is the source of the smell. It happens on long trips because it heats up over time. I discovered it when I was doing a stereo install.

@FastHackem - that is an impressive car list. It reads like my dream car list! Color me jealous!
