Exclamation HELP... Doors wont lock or unlock

Hey guys. I ran into a very strange problem with my car today. My doors stopped locking and unlocking with the key. They wont even lock or unlock using the button on the center console. My passenger side door wont unlock and I cant get my gas door open. Im very low on gas so I cant even drive to my indy shop to get it checked out. My car still beeps but none of the doors lock or unlock. The only way I can unlock and lock my car is when I open the driver side door with the key but only the drivers side will unlock.. Not the passenger side or the gas door.

Any advice or help is appreciated.

I dont think its the key either because it wont lock or unlock via the button on the center console either.

there's a central locking module. pretty sure it's called the GM5. look it up though, there are plenty of threads on it. i've been dealing with these same small issues on and off for the past 6 years but haven't tried fixing.

try unhooking your battery quick. maybe it will start working again.

I was able to get the gas door opened via the green cable in the trunk.

Now if I can figure out why my doors wont lock and unlock.. Hopefully I can get my passenger door unlocked because that wont unlock at all.

I'd say fuse. But the module could be playing up also.

I had to break a rear window and tear out the rear seats to get to my key which had idiotically been locked into the boot Did this happen when your '**** were out?' (the roof open lol) maybe it's something to do with the motion detector or summin ?

Sounds like your GM5 is failing. http://bmwgm5.com/ is your friend.

Idk if this is the same as gm5, but I have exact same problem. My doors sometime don't respond to my keyfob. And I got exact same symptoms. I ordered myself another door actuator. Try getting another actuator. I had same sh*it yesterday where I needed gas and gas door won't open because key fob didn't unlock my doors

I have the same problem as the OP. Did you ever fix the issue? Sometimes I can't even unlock the doors from the inside. The only way is by manually inserting the key into driver side door. Damn this is really dangerous.

I got a GM5 module from another car. I gotta get in swapped. Since my glovebox cant unlock I have to go to a shop to have them do it. I may go tomorrow so Ill let you know if the GM5 was the problem.

I already have a different GM5 unit. Will it work directly with my car or will I need to have anything coded?

You would have to code a new GM5. Why not call the guy a bmwgm5.com and explain your problem? Seems better than just guessing. I had the same problem. It was intermittent. I ended up buying new lock relays and putting them in myself. Very easy fix. Cost about $40.

You could also send your whole unit to Scott and have him fix it for as little was $120 or so....

If you don't care, just keep guessing and hope it fixes the problem.

Thank you for the troubleshooting tips and suggestions. When I get some time Ill get around to fixing it sometime this week.

Of course I do care. I had a spare GM5 unit that I got from a buddy who was parting his car out. So of course Im gonna take it if it didnt cost me anything.

I would say that every e46 comes with a gm5 that is coded to the car. another gm5 would probably not function right. I never tried it so I wouldnt know.

I say give scott a phone call, let him know your situation, and he'll let you know if you need his services or not. He makes enough money that he doesnt need to lie to you.

Gm5's are a PITA. Go for the fixing of the stock gm5, I recommend it

Droptopkingm3, your problem sounds like a fuse and not the GM5 based on locking and unlocking failing atthesame time. The GM5 rarely fails for both unlocking AND locking. Most of the time when the GM5 fails it intermittently won't unlock. Locking continues to work without problem for years before it starts to fail also.

You can take your spare GM5 and try it as a test, but, don't continue using it. Once you're done with testing pull it out and put your original one back in or just leave it out.

BTW current repair cost at bmwgm5.com is as low as $90 for regular service. $120 is for faster service and Express mail return shipping. No programming or trips to the dealer are required when a module is repaired. Just pop it out and pop it back in.
