Fan blades fail.

Did anybody had a issue in with your fan blades go flying off and braking the radiator, shroud, air intake duct and messing up the hood too?.

I haven't experienced this myself, but it can happen if you have a mechanical fan.
One of two things probably happen: Your water pump bearing has failed catastrophically making the fan spin off center hitting the shroud and tearing itself apart.

Your motor mounts are toast, letting your engine move too much resulting in the fan hit the shroud which then tears itself apart.

+1

If the blades are breaking off, there is some other problem that allows them to strike stuff. One should search out these problems before putting a new fan on, or the blades will come flying out again.

Very common with E39s. When I drive BMWs with mechanical fan blades, I always replace them as preventative maintenance. Don't forget the fan clutch too

It's such a known weakness that it's a good idea just to change them. The clutch gets weaker with time, at least mine have.

And another tip: ONLY *only* only buy genuine BMW fan blades. Do not mess with aftermarket brands such as MTC. Horror stories

Another possible causer is a failed fan clutch. If they fail and lock up, the engine speed and fan speed will match and these plastic fans will blow to pieces much past 3000rpm.

Yes, happened TWICE to me..... first time hood with a tiny nick on it and my shroud going of course. Second time it destroyed my radiator. It turned out to be my engine mounts. Had it fixed and I did the electric fan swap. It will NEVER happen again.

Happened to me twice. First time took out the radiator, hoses, belts and the grills (hood was open). Second time, it took out just the radiator on my way home. Hood, belts and hoses were ok.

This, plus a stuck clutch that causes the fan to rotate 1:1 with the pump.
