Auto to Manual Trans Swap (pics) Complete!

My 16 yr old son and I set out to do an Auto to Manual swap this past weekend, we started Friday evening and finished by Sunday morning, I think the whole project took us from 18-20 hours. I got all the parts from a local junk yard... The flywheel looks dirty on the picture but it was in perfect shape (I had the clutch, press and flywheel checked before the install and was told it still had about 90% life in the parts ) After all the sweat and tears you might wonder, was it hard to do? Well since I had a helper (my son) it wasn't that hard. Was it worth it? Oh yes! the bimmer now feels like , it feels lighter faster, stronger and since I have a 3.46 diff well you can just imagine the burn out capabilities over all I'm very happy with this mod, oh and I only paid $650+tax on all the parts needed for the swap from my local junk yard.
Thanks to e46fanatics responsible for this excellent DIY : http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=659314

Looks good, I think if I was gonna do the swap i would go all in and get a 6 speed. Would increase the overall cost however.

Now run to lowes and make your own clutch (aka elevator bolt ) stop and you are set! And it looks from the picture CDV already removed too!

Now clean up that tranny and sell it for some cash on the corner, pimp!

PS tranny = transmission for some of yous with nasty brains..

6 speed manual is too expensive and hard to find at a decent price....

That is still pending (for now I have the CEL lit up with a code related to auto trans failure but car runs good) , I will look for an Indy shop or if I can't find one that can update my bimmer's DME to manual trans I'll just take it to the stealer in the next week or so and get it reprogrammed...

Why didn't you decide to upgrade the clutch / flywheel? It looks OEM, but I could be wrong.

My Ride: makes my pants tight
Nicely done sir!

Glad mine came with three pedals already though...I'm sure plenty of blood and sweat went into that swap

that might cost more than the swap in your case... why not leave it if its running good?

CEL is expensive at dealer, like couple of hundred bucks, if you dont know anyone with a tool like PA soft. You might find an indie shop that will do it for much cheaper or rent a tool from fellow fanatic maybe? If you were in PA I would have taken care of it for you in 5 mins..

Ehem, and I wouldnt dare suggest you to buy a chinese version of PA soft for 50$ either.. You know, thats bad, and wrong.. ehem...

and good call on the clutch, you got a 16 year old, that thing will wear out teaching him how to drive..
