Why is shrimp so goddamn expensive?

I'm baffled... I really am.

Why does shrimp have to be so expensive? Adam, please give me some professional advice before I get pissed off. I could polish off 1lb of shrimp cocktail without thinking twice about it, but $20/lb for U12/16's... Jesus Christ... you tear them in half then sell them, wtf!

Costco has EXCELLENT U10s in the freezer section, at $11.99 for a 2.5lb bag. BTW, I run one of the largest restaurant groups in NYC, so I'm not an "average joe."

Yea, and they are actually of great quality. If you can get access to restaurant depot, they have tigerprawns for a great price as well.

I shall be going to restaurant depot soon, i love that place! Everything is super cheap, its like a better costco full of people who know how to shop =D

I buy all my shrimp from Sams or Costco.

Yea, I use RD for just about everything when cooking for parties or other projects.

As for certain seafood, yes you can get it there cheap but it will not match the quality of getting if from a good fish store. I had a project where I needed scallops and bought a 10lb bucket which I wound up giving away or using personally since they weren't something that I wanted to serve. Clams and mussels are a steal there as well. They only way I've been able to get them cheaper is taking the boat to some of the clam beds around here.

I also have a bunch of their pots, pans, cooking tools everything. You really can't beat the prices.

A lot of the frozen shrimp in big stores are white and shrimp and are no good. Tiger prawns are alright.

Try to find some 10/15ct or 16-20ct brown shrimp. They are getting expensive, been a terrible year for shrimp. Right now were selling 10/15ct for $14.99 and 16/20 for $11.99. The 10/15s are expensive, around $10lb my cost right now which sucks.

They've gone crazy ever since the oil spill and have never come down. Before the spill I was paying about $3-4 for a good 21-25ct shrimp and probably $7ish for a 10-15ct. They doubled/tripled after the spill and haven't really moved a ton yet. I picked up 1000lbs of 10-15s a few weeks ago for a tad under $10lb and it was a steal(wholesalers want about 11-11.50 right now). focking ridiculous.

I was gonna bring up Costco and the U10's but someone beat me to it.

Went there yesterday and bought 10lbs of it for my mom's welcome home party. Can't wait to annihilate them off my plate.

One of the few things I miss about Portland was our local seafood market. It was one of the main seafood distribution hubs for Oregon, with a tiny little shop up front that looked older than heck - and semi trucks and giant ice hoppers out back. There were a bunch of 70 yr old guys working phones in the back for the distribution side, a few 70 and 80 year old men and women out front, and a bunch of younger guys driving forklifts. The first time I bought clams there, I asked, "so, are these pretty fresh?" and they looked at me like I was stupid and said, "they were still in the water this morning". Never bothered asking that again. Awesome stuff. Cheap, too. Fresh Dungenous crab meat (from whole crabs) for $20 a lb - with other local markets selling the same product for $30+.
