at all the latest posts.

This thread isn't about tightening up the MAF and DISA connectors those won't make a difference.

It's about ALL of the connectors being gone through for it to make an effect...

WOW!!! Mine seems to run great, but Mrs drove it 325 home, and I drove it when it was running out of fuel, and only a very few miles after the fillup, and then 1 mile down a side road, foot to the floor!

Can I repair the VANOS myself? special tools? How much for parts? Or do they do the repair/exchange?

I read thru the entire procedure... sheeesh... Just like the Harley engines of the 70's, and Harley couldn't have cared less to improve a defective seal/gasket system.

We might never know for sure. My '04 seals were fine when I replaced them at seven years and 77,000 miles. So perhaps BMW did upgrade without saying for liability reasons.
But watch for the symptoms in your car to see if this might be a fix for you.

Chevrolet had the same issue w Corvairs back when they were new in the 60's, and even tho VITON seals were discovered after a few years, GM never woke up, and Corvairs leaked oil like crazy from the pushrod tubes...
Is my car the exception in that it seems to run so well? Or are we just reading the worst case storys here? ('03 325xi 158k, oil never changed lol)

Do all the BMW's use the VANOS? Even the V12's? Did the seals ever get improved? Is it possible mine are original w seldom oil changes?

That's your cam sensor. The lower one is the exhaust vanos soleniod the one up by the manifold is for the intake soleniod.
