Neil1138's Lighting Project, FX-R retro

Posted in the lighting forum a couple weeks ago but that place is a graveyard. This will be of more help here.

After some deliberation, I finally ponied up and bought some new TRS FX-R 2.0 projectors. These will be going into my DEPO P46s and my P46 projectors will be retrofitted into my fog light housings. During this swap, I switched back to Bosch housings and Bosch headlight lenses (which are still in good shape after 10 years).

Needed parts:

Headlight frames (non reflector, can be ZKW, AL, P46)
Shrouds (OEM 2.5" or E46-R w/ centric rings)
TRS FX-R 2.0 projectors
D2S bulbs, I opted for the Philips 85122
Dremel w/ assorted bits
JB Kwik (not JB Weld, takes too long to dry)

Before we get started, the interior project is holding up well (closing in on 2 years!)

And the chalkboard E30 looks better than ever

Let's get started:

failing depo lens

Onto the new parts!

TRS's new FX-R 2.0 projector

Uncut P46 frame

Sizing up the fit

After some dremmeling

Not near enough forward! Needs more work

Finished frame

Using JB Kwik to test fit the projectors. The key here is to hold the projector in place well enough to test the rotation, you don't want it permanently in place. JB kwik sets in 4 minutes which is good

Testing cutoff

Drivers side needs rotated a few degrees

Sharp

Will update soon.

Wow, great retrofit!
That looks like a lot of work.
Love that crisp cutoff.

Curious, what was the reason behind swapping projectors?
What is the reason/benefits?

Nice job! I love my FX-R's from TRS too, but haven't had the time to properly align the sharp cut-off as nicely as yours!

The output from P46s isn't the best. They have significant pencil beams and a weak cutoff.

You will see the improvement when I get more pics up. Trust me, it's worth it

The cutoff is nice and sharp but I'm having a bowing cutoff problem (on three separate projectors and two sets of OEM Philips bulbs). Kinda sucks

Not sure if it's an inherent problem with the new 2.0 version or what.

I was going to do FX-R's in place of my burnt ZKW's, but I figured the AL projectors were just a tad bit lower and they'd be good enough.

Now I kick myself every time I see FX-R's

Projector fully seated

With shroud on

Pics of the shroud fitment. I did cover up where the angel eye once sat, success

At this point there was an issue with the driver side projector (bowed cutoff). TRS sent out a new one asap so later photos are with the updated cutoff

I'm still working on the retrofitting the P46 projectors into the fog lights. Let me just say that they look damn legit so far. Will get photos up soon... proper output photos.

More on the interior project! Lights look great, saw it over in the lighting forums as well. That'll be something I do this next winter, super pumped on it. Probably do a quad setup; looks in mind

Looks great! What bulbs did you go with? Phillips 85122+?

Also, you should have taken some before pictures... To show how horrible DEPOs are.
