Oil Filter removal from plastic housing
Hello Guys,
Need help asap.. in the middle of an oil change (first time with this car, have done so many before)... Everything is done, but the oil filter is kind of stuck in the upper housing (I opened it with 36mm socket, but the oil filter came out with the housing and not coming out). There is a plastic rod coming out in the middle, I have tried rotating it in either directions... it rotates, but not sure how to take it out.. just dont want to apply force and break something .Looked at threads, could not find anything.. please let me know .. Thanks. |

It just pulls right off the top. No extra work necessary.

You just pull the filter off/out. I have the E36, and the filter remains inside the canister when I take the lid off, but I think the E46 lid comes off and the filter comes out with the lid. Either way, you simply pull filter out/off.

Pull them straight apart. Nothing will break. The filter more-or-less is wedged onto the cap.

Thanks guys
.. Once I applied force, it came right off. It was stuck pretty hard, and I was scared of breaking something by applying too much force .Finally, oil change successful . However, I am still not able to reset the oil miles.. u know... Mine is 99, E46, and I read I need to ground pin 7 and 19 (if I remember correctly) for 3 seconds..however, tried it so many times, but not working ...Will do more research and hopefully will do it in few days |

If I am not mistaken there is a way of doing the reset through the hidden OBC functions.

I believe that the miles to service doesn't just indicate an oil change, but also indicates that other things need to be checked etc prior to it being reset.
